Heya Hardy!
In the pursuit for something to keep me out of trouble when there is nil wind I spent a heap of time on website wake.com.au . It has a heap of fanatical (and some purist) wake dudes that will be more than happy to tell you what they think. Don't ask the type of questionthat has been asked a hundred times before "What boat should I get?" as there will usually be a post not too far back that has had a heap of replies...
Board and bindings $400 - $1500+++
Boat - V8 mid or rear mount (no outboards as you can't get them to stop planing). Go for a Ford motor, no reason other then Holdens just suck!!!!

You need the boat to be real heavy to set a thick wake. New models can be as expensive as $60-70,000 which have pumps to take on and dump water quickly for ballast. They have heaters & trip computers and heaps of seating/storage.
I was looking at a 1993 skicraft for $12,000. (We couldn't afford it, but regretted not buying it anyway!) Rather than ballast, go for a really big plastic esky, full of stubbies instead of cans, as they're heavier!
Ski-poles - TOWERS are the go, putting your rope point up high. You can stick some huge speaker boxes to them as the bikini babes will need something to bop along to while you're nailing front flips!!!

We are blessed in WA to have heaps of freshwater lakes and dams, all being really cool camping spots. We have camped at Lake Poorarecup (NE of Mt Barker) a few times now with the runabout and ski biscuit. Miles from anywhere!!!
Go for it Hardy!!!!!
