And you are all invited - except for those that are dead to me.

Only a few years away, I want to have a hangi for my 50th. Never experienced one.

I'm sure there are plenty of noo zeananders here, How good are they? I'll hire a legit crew who can access the right rocks and stuff.

I've always talked about it, It's gunna happen - 23 Sept 2014.

Do you publish a list? Is it updated frequently? I'd hate to turn up and be disappointed.

FWIW, you are also dead to me, as I bought two air-swimmers only to find that they were not able to be controlled independently. I should have called fair trading, but instead I onsold the air-swimmers.

Even though you are dead to me, any invite to a hungi is most welcome.

had one once, at Booroloola prepared by a couple of outback millionaires

in their 70's then. the sandy bed of the Mccarthur river provoided the needed

building materials. Barramundi and Swordfish were the mainstay and they after

6 hours were delicious. Bundy rum and Johnny Walker were drunk from flagons

handed round the camp fire under the sparkling starry sky. Beer was for school

teachers and ****ters.....AH.......memories .....circa 1965..DO I Adolf

I went to a hangi prepared by a heap of maoris, so as authentic as you can get.

You dig the hole, prepare the fire, line it with wet cotton (in place of banana leaves or whatever), chuck the food in, wrap it up, cover it over and wait numerous hours.

The end result is slow steamed food. The problem is, if you have fatty stuff or root veges you end up with with fatty, gooey glug. We had chicken and fish and lamb and sweet potato and stuff.

I guess if you choose your menu (fish, chicken, green veges), and go a bit asian on the flavouring it could be pretty good.

I would be more inclined to go the italian style, wood fired oven with heaps of pizzas and a slow roasted stews and lamb.

Nah there's quite a few on the list. I made it after I started a thread on the Japanese Tsunami.

But to the best of my knowledge Kiteboy Dave, you are the only one to have the phrase 'Dead to me' repeated and highlighted.

Nah, no one on here is on the list. In fact it's not even a list - at the moment it's just got one person on it, so I don't even know why I mentioned it.... Oh I remember now. Alcohol played a part.

Kiteboy was dead to me for a little while, but then he started that really funny thread with the Musilm peasant boy holding up the beheaded sign - most amusing..

Woohoo I'm off the list

Make sure you do a practise run. My sister's kiwi fiance decided he wanted to do one for their engagement party. He was fairly useless at most things and this was no exception. He failed to get enough heat in to the rocks, and after 4 hours everything was taken out and done in the oven, by that time it came out all the guests bar my wife and I had left (hungry), and we had 20kgs of poorly cooked meat to eat. Not a success

Yes unfortunately she did. Lasted all of a year.
She's better off without him.

When I moved to NZ (I was born feet first) we thought we best go try some culture, or at least something, so we went to Rotarua where we went to a Hangi. Touristy, but nonetheless.

So the food is served on a big table, and to be honest it didn't look much. Very plain but respectable. From memory it was salmon, but perhaps it was trout (trout is 50% better in my opinion/btw).

I am yet to have a better piece of fish.

I've been to plenty of good restaurants since, but nothing has come even close to this salmon that was slow cooked all day in a hangi. It was sublime. 11/10.

I'll bring the Tui if I'm invited.

Have had plenty of these being a rugby player and playing with a load of kiwis - it's a cool thing to do, but as far as taste of the meat, it's pretty overrated. Personally I think it tastes ****! But you've got to try it.
