G'day,
Not water or wind related but...
Has anyone installed a kitchen from a kit?? How much was it worth and was it a decent set-up??

Cheers
Dan

Ikea kitchens look like Ikea kitchens
Im in the process of putting a new kitchen in.
Being a sparky and having plumber and chippy mates make putting a real kitchen in cheap and easy.
Instead of paying 30 g's for my kitchen, I can do it for 15 g's give or take a couple of grand... more like give seeing that my wife bought a Miele dishwasher

Owning a kitchen design/manufacture/installation business (or 'joinery') for 14yrs.......I'll throw in my 2 bobs....

Personally, you can't beat a custom-made job from a good quality joiner, although some of the large kitchen manufacturer's are starting to get their act together. Kit kitchens used to be crappy, cheap, lightweight & with inferior chinese components, now a few are starting to purchase quality, european fittings, and using quality Aus-made board (best on market!).

With technology the way it is, there's no reason whay you can't design your own kitchen (get advice if needed), take it to a small-medium Joinery, and they'll supply it 'fllat-packed' with instructions for you to install. I did for clients, and over 14yrs (400+ kitchens, only a small joinery, some do that a month!).....had 2 warranty jobs, which were from harsh wear (from kids mainly), fixed up/replaced within days.

1. Ask heaps of questions
2. Get prices
3. Checkout past jobs, or even talk to existing clients.
4. hardware, find out the brand and research it (you can't beat 'blum' & 'hettich') if the hardware fails, doors sag, drawers break, handles tarnish....you get the drift.

Don't settle for 'kit' looking kitchens, you might find that you actually pay more than you would for a better/personalised job by a tradey that actually gives a s*%t about what they do!

PM if you want any specific info......my brain's full of it (unfortunately), and have archives of info for fun bed-time reading

personally i don't see anything wrong with ikea. it's cheap, does the job and looks the goods in most cases.

however -

the biggest issue with flatpack kitchens is you usaually get 2-pac finish. 2-pac wears badly. pre-finished board would be a far better way to go and if you have a little more money go for laminated. another issue is the plastic end strips that some flat pack kitchens have. that is really what makes it all look cheap.

another issue is that "typically" a flat pack setup comes in standard sizes. so if you have an "L" shape setup you will have to figure out what to do with the tolerance areas at the end.

cost wise it is a question of how long is a piece of string.

you can get them cheap and you can get them very very expensive. imported flat pack kitchens like bofi etc are certainly high quality have pretty good 2-pac finish and cost a motza.
