IMHO, if you get caught taking a sickie, and lying about it, it should be instant dismissal. (Ex-employer here btw...

I work extra hours knowing that when I need them, I can take a 'me' break for a sail or go to kids sports, school appointments etc. When I sat in on my initial job interview, I said that this would be the case, my boss agreed to it, and as I've been honest from day one, it's never been a prob. I just call the office, let the practice manager know that the wind's up, and that I'll be back in 2-3hrs (or if it's a late arvo sail, knock-off early & generally come back in after kids in bed to make up a few hours)...easier, and lets me sleep at night knowing that all's above board.
