Less than $300.00 to claim, using an accountant just purely to avoid the hassle. Oh, add the accountant's fee. LOL

I had an extremely wealthy relative, that used to brag to my Dad about the fact that he'd paid pretty much no tax all his life.

He's dead now, and so is my Dad, but the value of the advice of one, far exceeds that of the other.

I had lunch today with a mate that paid more tax than I earnt gross.
I made him pay for lunch.

Pretty sure negative gearing laws were intended to create more housing for the rental market, reducing the burden on state housing.

State housing is a financial cost on tax payers, technically supporting those that can't support themselves in the normal rental market.

The incentive for those able to benefit from investing in property also needed to be there, otherwise they would invest elsewhere.

Where there is huge amounts of money to be made via many rental properties, the original intent is somewhat negated, and could probably be "contained" by simply putting a fairly tight limit on how many properties can be NG'd, and encourage the super-wealthy not to write off pretty much any tax obligation.

I have no problem with the hard working person being rewarded commensurate with their endeavor.

It becomes a problem when the tax paid by the super-wealthy is less than the regular worker.

Yes, I consider negative gearing as middle class welfare.

I don't consider a lot of tax deductions as welfare too, but some will be. I don't know why some people seem to be able to get a tax benefit from leasing a car when they don't use it for work, only getting to and from there.

As a bonafide moron, I think legitimate deductions that are for earning your income are okay, but some seem to be just a rort.

My current landlord doesn't have insurance on his own property, and I'm having some difficulty with "his" neighbour over a dividing fence that blew down.

Aside from a leaking roof requiring me to move bunches of my stuff into a dry place...

For some people, money is everything, and make the life of a tennant with goodwill, difficult.

The suggestion of withholding rent payment got him pretty toey, so we'll see what happens.

Don't forget overseas trips for religious events.
