Three things where patently clear from the first sighting. She was lodged in the
rocks, she was naked and she appeared to have been dismembered. What wasn't so
clear was what were we going to do about it?
The morning had started out innocently enough.
A brilliant summer's day marred by the surfer's bane.
A lack of swell.
Not a mere shortage of swell or a reduction in
waves but a virtual absence of discernible swells entirely.
The obvious recourse was to shift to plan B. Don snorkel and flippers and spend time
investigating areas of reef that normally would be hidden by the roil of the sea
Treasure of a sort could be found here. The sea bed becomes a receptacle
over time, a result of myriad encounters between rock and surfboard. Fins poked out
of dark reef recesses like curved plastic headstones. Leg ropes, jewellery and
waterproof watches could sometimes be found, wrested from their owner's grasp by
the tumult above.
More than the lure of treasure however was the allure of the reef itself. The sea on a
calm day is a different world from the feverish lashing menace it can so often be.
Gentle is the movement as the sea seems to breathe a silent swell in and out. Sea
weeds waving to traffic light red and green coloured fish. Dark blue pools and clean
white sand. The peace and beauty made the discovery that much more incongruous.
That she was female was plainly apparent. Her bare breasts could clearly be seen
from where the two divers floated above her..... No further proof of her femininity
was possible however as her entire lower body from the waist down was absent.
They had slowly moved from the shallow of the reef into deeper water. Normally
neither would have ventured out this deep but the calm conditions gave a sense of
security and neither felt threatened, until now.
She appeared to be lodged in the rocks but by what means was difficult to tell. The
depth of the water precluded either diver from reaching her. Both tried but she
remained just out of reach of their wriggling sallies.
A further disquieting observation was the fact that she no longer appeared to have
arms. Had she encountered a denizen of the deep while swimming? One who had
proceeded to if not charm her at least disarm her. If so, was said denizen still in the
vicinity? The thought may have passed their minds but neither diver turned for the shore, yet
The younger diver, more courageous and the fitter of the two continued his attempts
to reach the girl. One attempt resulted in him almost reaching the corpse and on his
return he brought with him revealing and valuable information. He spoke quietly to the
older man. They both then turned and headed for shore.
Neither diver hurried or exhibited outward signs of fear or danger. The older man
quietly flippered along silently musing to himself.
He knew now the fate of the girl. He probably could work out how she came to be
there at the bottom of the sea. Washed overboard while fulfilling her role with some
crew. He now knew what job she had done and from what the young man had said he
even knew her name.
His hands had brushed those breasts and his lips had touched hers. His fingers had
stroked her neck and his palm had rested quietly on her brow. Her soft touch had
guided him in his chosen profession and as a nurse he probably could not have gained
essential knowledge without her assistance.
Reaching the shore he turned and gazed back.
To the cerulean sky and the sparkling sea.
To the wheeling gulls and squawking terns.
Then finally his eyes halted at the last resting place of the girl.
A girl who was known to many men.
A girl who existed to help others.
A girl labelled by her singularly unusual name
Annie.
Resus. Annie
NB Resus Annie is a the name given to a mannequin used as an aid in CPR.
