A German paraglider, practicing yesterday for an Int'l comp in NSW, got sucked up into a storm cell - and survived.
Unfortunately, a Korean died in the same circumstances & storm.

The German lady got shot up to 30,000 ft - that's higher than Mt Everest
She was unconscious for an hour (lack of oxygen), suffered frostbite, but was able to land eventually & is a bit embarrassed by whole episode & will still compete.

Apparently there was ice all over her and her gear when she landed. That's hardcore!!

On the radio today there was a bit of background. This particular fate is not that uncommon for paragliders. It strikes me as ironic when the main aim of paragliding is staying air born, that staying too air born can be fatal. I never would have thought that you couldn't fall fast enough to avoid that kind of trouble.

From my understanding - she more than likely got sucked up into one of those huge black storm clouds that you see that go straight up and billow out at the top at great height. The forces/energy generated within the core of these things are immense with very fast upward thermal type affect measured in the hundreds of feet per X seconds. The normal idea for a paraglider/hanglider would be to put it into a steep spiral bank to lose altitude , as quickly as possible. The fact that this pilot couldnt do so, could attest to type of forces we're talking about. I reckon at 30,000 ft. she should be able to claim some sort of altitude record with a paraglider without oxygen.
All I can say is Respec!!

Only Greg Norman in his jet. But eagles get pretty pissed-off when humans drop in on their thermal. And don't think they won't attack a canopy many times their size..

Made me think of an old wise Chinese proverb

“Eagles may soar but gerbils don’t get sucked into jet engines”

Christ Haircut,
Getting sucked into jet engines is much worse. You haven't lived.
