Two whom it may concern and the purests amoungst us.
Macquarie (2000.p131p484).

The word MAP is such,a map being:

1. A representation, on a flat surface,of a part or the whole of the earths surface,the heavens ,or a heavenly body.

2. A a map like representation of anything.

3.To represent or delineate in or as a map.


The word CHART:

1. A sheet giving information often in table or graph form.

2. A map,especially one showing sea and waterways.

3. An outline map showing special information:weather chart.

4. A list of best selling popular recordings for a particular period.

5. To make a chart of.

6. To plan a course of action.


Hate the word Maps but love a Chart

Just realised both these words are nouns and verbs.
I have no preference but using the word Chart in reference to map(?) had never occured to me.

My wife doesn't understand maps so I'll ask here to use charts from now on.

... a chart is designed to be viewed with the direction of travel facing away from the viewer Just like a street atlas!

Captain Cook didn't have any maps he navigated off his charts

Well then on the other hand Captian Hook probably departed with rough Maps if any and thus created charts

I think maps are terestrial and charts are nautical ?????
