Just got my new rego certificate and sticker in the mail today with a notice that after a date next year no more stickers will be issued and therefore not required to be displayed.

So what does this really mean??? The notice prattled on about the alleged environmental benefits, convenience etc, but it obviously goes deeper than that.

What it says to me is that the number plate and facial recognition software combined with high definition cameras has been perfected and is now fully operational.

Roadside cameras are WiFi and BlueTooth capable which means any one of us in or on a vehicle carrying a "smart phone" can be three way verified as being at a certain location at a certain time.

If this is not "big brother", tell me what is!!!

That information is called "meta data" and in less sophisticated form has been being collected for quite some time to date. Legallly the Aus gubmnt is not allowed to access or use it without a warrant so far.

However the "meta data" is being collected with google software which the U.S. gubmnt has full access to. The U.S. gubmnt shares their info with the Aus gubmnt and others so the legalities that are supposed to protect our privacy are circumvented.

It even happens here on Sea Breeze!!! If you have been looking at a certain product via the net, the next time you come here an ad for that appears here.

Forget about "cookies" on your computer. It is all in the "cloud" now. We need to collectively say NO to this invasion of our privacy.

Wot think ye????

You are over thinking it. It's about saving a few bucks on printing and posting the stickers.

I think its funny that they have done the same in NSW, again, because the technology means that they can film cars and automatically determine if they are currently registered or have other issues.

The problem is, that its hard to remember your rego is due sometimes, so the stickers were a benefit. I saw stickers being sold in a petrol station in WA, which were intended to remind you that your rego was due... why not just give us the stickers with our rego!

It's a bit off a load off rubbish. It was brouht in here in S.A. Don't see how it saves anything as you still get a reminder in the mail and on top off that an extra bit off paper with all the veihcles details. So theyve taken away a plastic sticker and added more paper. Still you can't miss paying as you still get a reminder.

Be aware that the Gov. in your state possibly has also at the same time increased the fines / penalties for driving a unreg. vehicle.

With the cameras etc to detect being unreg. you are then sent via mail of any infringments of such. ie. if you are detected every day for a week via a camera for the offence you may be hit with 7x fine ammount etc. BEFORE you even know about it.

For workplaces where vehicles are shared, the driver (at the time) is liable for any fines.... so make sure your work place has a good system of checking of vehicle registration BEFORE you drive it.

Oh the reason to go stickerless is to increase revenue for the Gov. (with fines)....... Why are we supprised

Nothing to do with facial recognition. Facial recognition currently has limited uses, limited places, limits on database size, requires a million times more processing than recognising 3 numbers and 3 letters.

Rego plate recognition, yes. Cop cars are being fitted out with that, will be all of them before too long. Scan in front/back & lanes beside, automatically, all the time. Any plates: unreg, on lookout list, registered to person with warrant, etc will set off alarm.

I work for a Toyota dealer... what you may not realise is that with just your rego, (and from your registration your cars VIN number), regardless of the make of your vehicle we can see what services and work your vehicle has had done in the past, what work that you have refused to have done, (prohibitive cost perhaps), and what warranted replacements the manufacturer requires done to it to maintain its roadworthyness because they buggered something up during manufacture that you have or haven't have had done.
The cops have access to the manufacturers websites here in WA, so I imagine that they do elsewhere in Oz as well... we went stickerless here in WA a few years ago ostensibly to save money. It ended up costing more not to issue stickers and the rego costs went up, again.

A vehicle where I work was pinged for not being registered by a camera. Apparently the accounts office forgot to renue the rego on the ute and someone was innocently driving it on the street. A police officer with a special camera system scanning number plates in busy traffic, spotted this ute and a few days later a nasty letter arrived in the mail.

Big Brother is watching us and he is getting bigger.

way overthinking it. These days cop cars, boating and fisheries etc have 3g access back to their systems. can look up rego status from numberplate quickly and easily. back in the old days, no way of knowing unless being back in the office. gotta remember that there would be large costs behind stickers/ administration/ follow up etc. awesome. better for everyone - consumer, enviroment and dept transport

^^^ nice thoughts bit can take up to 3 days for the system to update.... You get issued a fine and the YOU need to prove that you payed the rego.
There were MANY instances of SA drivers in VIC. getting pinged for no rego sticker and then going to the SA rego site to prove the car was reg. but with the delay of updates or no phone coverage.... fine issued.

I had to get a trailer registered in WA a few months after they stopped the stickers here (including taking it over the pits). It was chaos in the inspection centre and the lady serving me reckons it went absolutely nuts when they cancelled the stickers because people would miss the rego due notice, end up with an unlicenced car, and then have to get it inspected to get it re-registered.

It's caught my dumb-arse sister out. Only twice so far, but I'm sure there'll be more.

W.A. Transport department send me an automatic SMS [around a week?] before any rego or license expires.

When the number plate recognition cameras first fired up over here- the amount of unlicensed cars they were catching was astounding.

I think it was something like several thousand per week, happy to be corrected if someone out there has the accurate figures.

I understand that when a plate number is picked up by a camera, the vehicle rego is checked- but the owners address is automatically checked as well- and anyone there is run through the system, looking for potential unlicensed drivers, outstanding warrants, unpaid fines, persons of interest etc.

Even when WA had the stickers, I don't ever recall looking at the rego sticker of a mates or borrowed car to ensure it was registered.
I think the argument is clutching at straws because inherently people do not like change.

In good old NSW we still get registration renewal papers to be completed every year. So its difficult to forget knowing if you missed your car registration, unless perhaps you moved address and did not inform the RTA. NSW must have the safest cars in Australia as cars older than three years must be inspected by a mechanic before their registration can be renewed.

Whatever is the most expensive way to do it, its probably done in NSW.

For all those that want the stickers, there is a really nifty way of knowing when your rego is due... Go by the expiry date on the renewal letter they send you. Even better is the letter always seems to get sent around 6 weeks before it expires.

I can't see any big brother conspiracy there? Get the bill in the mail. Go pay the bill.

No conspiracy, but there are dunderheads like myself that forget, and look at the sticker and go 'I'd better do that soon'.

Here its more like, 'the rego's due, find a place to get a pink slip, book it in, buy the green sleep, get it registered'. Not so bad, but easy for me to forget. If they just kept on including the stickers, I would just keep on forgetting to changing the old one anyway

As per Moby's comment on new cars and cars older than 3 years needing an inspection. It's now 5 years you can go before you need a pink slip inspection.

SCENE 67
Location: INT. BLUESMOBILE - NIGHT
Elwood produces his driver's license from above the sun visor. It is a plastic plate. He hands it to the cop. The cop leaves and walks back to his car.

JAKE: (angrily) God damnnit!
ELWOOD: Damnnit! I haven't been pulled over in six months. I bet those cops have got SCMODS.
JAKE: SCMODS?
ELWOOD: State-County-Municipal-Offender Data System.

The license number appears On the screen.

Yep,

I can tell you from experience the cops/court system don't give a ratz who stuffed up. All they'll be interested in when they pull you over Is the fact you're driving an unregistered vehicle.

DOPI (in WA) were sending the rego and then overdue notices for my new car to the house up the street (someone punched in the street nom the wrong way round )

The first I knew of it was the cop in my face after they did a random rego check [

No matter which way you spin it there is no real benefit to the driver.

Any environmental benefit is minuscule.

Any environmental benefit is a plus, and they are not really required anyway
