Funny, but I can't help to think that the article is about aussies of multiple generations, what they call 'classic' in the article, and not 1rst generation migrants. Those seem to have healthy families number-of-children-wise.

Am I the only one to read it like so ?

Apparently...

THE number of traditional family households is set to shrink to less than a quarter by 2026, with childless homes to become the new norm

Is this social commentary or mathematical forecasting, I'm confused.

I stopped reading at the title. Why people bother reading this tripe is beyond me. (With apologies to those who like tripe)

Yet another non-story with trumped up hypotheses and half baked ideas based on little to no data purely designed to push an agenda (I will leave identifying that agenda as an exercise to the reader).

PS: My rule is not to read anything that contains the phrase "Experts say".

Trust Me of Oz Posted at 9:08 AM Today...

Who today can afford kids? We are being fined every time we walk out the door, by anyone and everyone, RTA, councils, corporates, suppliers, banks, everyone is stealing a bit; we are being taxed into oblivion, and yet there is to be a carbon tax, who can afford it? There are more disincentives than incentives when it comes to building a family. Our lives have gone from peaceful to stressful. The thought of having a child or children means more stress more tax, more ways to be fined, more troubles. When we do have kids the government wont allow us to discipline them, teenagers, run riot, a parent has no rights to control them, yet parents are ultimately responsible for their kids actions, the risks are too high. You can loose everything should they do something stupid or make a mistake; and they will. There seems to be be nothing good about it; who in their right mind wants that?

Not to mention, that you may end up with just visitation rights to a handicapped person.

I'm no expert ... Risk, risk, risk, ~$1.8 million... at best for all your trouble you'll get somebody who sends you a birthday and Christmas card once a year.

Oh yeah, give me some kids.

Other culture, business owner, may be it would be nice to pass along my trade.

My thought was.. is this change of demographic really coming about because fewer couples are having children? Or is it because with an aging population there are increasing numbers of older couples whose children have left home? I couldn't tell. Wasn't enough information there for me to decide. Or it was there and I missed it due to lack of interest.

The problem with an article like this is that there is little room for how the figures were generated i.e - how variables were taken into account and disentangled from each other. As such, I don't hold it in much regard.
