WA urged to hurry up on infrastructure
www.theage.com.au/business/wa-urged-to-hurry-up-on-infrastructure-20070925-gdr6ni.html
September 24, 2007 - 4:00PM

The West Australian government should decide on how to proceed with vital infrastructure in the state's Mid West region in the next three months if it is to avoid reputational damage and iron ore project execution risks.

The warning was made by Gindalbie Metals Ltd chairman George Jones on Monday as he unveiled the company's plan to merge with Sundance Resources Ltd, a firm that he also chairs.

The future of vital new port and rail infrastructure in the Mid West came under a cloud recently when WA Infrastructure Minister Alannah MacTiernan was reported to favour a tender process to deal with several competing bids.

"A multi-user port (at Oakajee) makes a lot of sense to iron ore miners .... it's now up to the government to make a decision," Mr Jones said.

Many fear the minister's proposal will increase WA's sovereign risk, and Mr Jones noted that Australia's standing in this respect had slipped recently.

Mr Jones said Gindalbie would be a substantial customer of the Oakajee port through its Karara Magnetite and Mungada Hematite projects in the Mid West.

Gindalbie could effectively underwrite the new port.

Multi-user port means "URANIAUM" btw. So there could be an increase in 3 eyed fish stocks near Corro's should any unforseen spillages occur. That of course should never happen - just like raw sewage spills in the Swan should never happen.

And of course that's pure speculation, a multi user port is just that- a multi user port.

Point taken.
I'm sure the port facilities would be word class in safety issues so Uranium Oxide could be exported from there. Currently there is only 1 port that exports (Darwin) and most of the infastructure revolves around train lines to the top end.
I would just like the Govt to come out & say "Multi-user" included exports such as....!
Would it phase you to be running in yellowcake to Gerro's current main port facility....?

Gero port is a multi user port, if it came about that uranium was to be shipped through the port and as long it was moved with the best safety practices of the day - then I wouldn't have a problem, I wouldn't like it but then I don't like have to like it just like fuel, lead, copper, zinc.

(1) I posted here a month ago asking "hey dudes I filled out the petition, and have sent it to Hawaii etc, how have you been going?" ... and no reply. Makes me wonder if Gero WS club really are serious? If I was in charge of it and I lived at gero I'd be on here every night selling the petition idea and responding to questions.
OTOH, I ran the opposition to Port Coogee development (in case it buggered up Crazy Waves) and we got 10 semi-interested people come to the Windsurfing WA AGM..... prolly for the free piss only. We sent a petition to Allanah McTiernan (alias The Only One Marching In Step) and had no reply. Not even "thanks, we got your letter but get ****ed" .... and away she went with the development. I guess 1000 tourists can't be wrong, WA is not the mecca for windsurfing at all!

(2) Rex: Uranium and "multi use facility" etc etc. Trust them to do the right thing?

I lived in Esperance for the last 4 years, and was blown away that the EPA did not do inspections at the Port about every 6 months, with the odd random one thrown in. I assumed that they'd come to town, every 12 months or so (in addition to regular inspections) take some soil and air samples near the Port, without warning, and then go back for analysis.
In reality their inspections were ONCE in a 3 year period, they went to the Port office and said g'day, had a coffee and left, and didn't notice the 100 tonnes of lead powder in a shed with 3 sides, in a 20kn seabreeze!!!!!!!! For **** sake people.

I hate greenies, I have always been pro-uranium etc, but now I don't think for a moment that the d1ckhead pollies in WA could be trusted to regulate a kilo of uranium being exported in a dinghy, let alone a major industry.

I guess is been going on for 10 years now and peoples attention span is short, add to this the huge influx of new people that have moved to Gero for the mining dollar and to them oakagee is money and jobs.

It's not that I don't trust them - more like I don't trust anyone, sound and intrinsically safe handling procedures can be discarded because people cut corners. We all enjoy the the relative safety of flying in aircraft because of all the poor souls that have given thier lives through it's evolution, its the same with dangerous cargos, The upside of the Esperance mess was that there was a review of ports handling dangerous products and action taken where needed - no guarantee - but there never is.
