Hit the water before breakfast, sun stretches to rise,
Looks ordinary from shore, but out there’s a surprise.
A couple to warm up, then one that’s a prize,
A big toothy grin, an’ twinkling eyes.
Bacon an’ eggs, an’ tomata an’ cheese,
On toasted focaccia, in a light offshore breeze,
Tea from the billy, quiet chat with a mate,
Forecasting the day, afternoon surf's a date
Fishin’ with the young bloke, an’ watch while he learns,
Gently encouraged, gives untold returns,
Feel a bite, hand him the rod, tell him he’s just caught a biggun’,
His love the reward, takes effort to earn.
Baby girl on the long board, she’ll do a SUP session later,
She responds to encouragement, but not if ya bait her,
She squeals and she giggles, and she shreds a few
She scorns all craft, ‘cept the one made by you.
The Mrs is walking, with a couple of girls,
Seven klicks she will go, before the SUP gets a twirl,
More than earned some time off, with merit to boot
She’s fused to me solid, my old young girl.
Baked chook in camp oven, pissed before we eat,
She’ll follow with a surprise, a most welcome treat,
Won’t know how she done it, she’d kill me first,
But I know she be watching, misses nothing while we eat.
Drinkin’ beers from a slurry, tellin’ bull**** an’ lies,
Watchin’ satellites and stars, in inky black skies,
Our memories are well worn, the kids have new tales,
Bunch of silly old farts, who just think they’re wise.
Reading in bed, clarity ya don’t usually have,
Tried to bother the Mrs, but forgot to shave,
The tent flaps are up, to catch the light breeze,
Can hear the surf crashing, for tomorrow, a tease.
Sleep like an innocent, with dreams of the day,
Sharing pleasure again while dentin’ the hay,
A leak in the wee hours, alone on the beach,
One with the universe, something ya can’t teach.
