I used to be a serial parking fine offender in my 20's and in the last 20 or so years I've seen the light and have not got one since. That was until today.

I didn't realise I did the wrong thing, parked there every time I've been down that way. It turns out that only trailers were supposed to park where I was between December and April. It was not like I was causing a hazard as there was tons of parking available there, it just looked convenient and I made sure that I was parked where it said no standing. I seriously didn't see the other signs saying it was for cars with trailers only.

Anyway, I copped $117 for my error of judgment on my windscreen. Really, where are these councils coming from, what is a fair penalty for my mistake - personally I'd say around the $40 mark. Why was it $117 and not a round number - I don't get it?

Is there some sort of guidelines that determine how much councils can fine people for various mistakes, or is it pretty much open slather?

Has Australia got too many signs of what you can and can't do that send mixed messages to us?

There is a road nearby to where I live that is probably 800m long with three signs saying three different speed limits as you go down the street, it's micro-management gone mad.

Here is a good smashing parking fine for a person visiting not by choice, the Ford dealership in Morley WA.
Her car stalled while waiting at the lights near the dealership, she flattened the battery trying to get it started. Eventually she pushed it through the lights around the corner into side street. (small car) Wrote a note of "break down car wont start" placed it on the screen, then walked into Ford Dealer, asking for help. Help promptly delivered, after taking details, Lady heads off to catch bus to work. Dealer team walk out to car with a few lads to push car into service centre, and who's writing a ticket, good old grey Ghost. The service Manger explains predicament of owner, Grey Ghost, only says, "write a letter" and attaches a ticket to windscreen What a drop kick Break down was fuel line in tank broke off inside tank

The problem is that its the 21st century - she was about 2079 years too early...

I had a similar story $117 fine... I parked in a handicap-zone.... but it was free parking everyday "except Sunday 2pm-5pm" -> the sign itself had 4 different "free parking" statements with only the above bit written in the smallest font.

I got a fine while actually being in the car!!!! I was pulled up in a loading zone while a mate ran in to grab a slab. While he was in the shop an inspector came up to my window and told me to move on, I told him I was just waiting for my mate and that he would be 30 seconds, he insisted I move on regardless! As I was driving off my mate tapped on the window so I stopped and let him in. The inspector then had the nerve to tell me that because I had stopped to pick him up I was now going to get a fine! I drove off and a week later a fine arrived in the mail!!!!!!! I hate parking inspectors with a passion.

The councils need to raise money because most of them blew millions of ratepayer's dollars in speculative derivatives investments which of course became worthless during what is now commonly referred to as the G.F.C (global financial crash).

What qualified these beaurocrats to make these kind of decisions???

Sounds like maybe you were parked in a boat ramp carpark?

Being a frequent user of these carparks, I can tell you there is nothing more annoying than after launching the boat, to find half the carpark taken up by cars with trailors, and the other half just cars
Many times I have had to park 100m up the road on the side of the road with a very wide trailor attached...it is actually a hazard to passing motorists and cyclists.

I must also admit I cannot stand parking inspectors, especially the ones standing at airport drop-off and pickup areas!
