Has anyone had experience buying a car from SA? Trying to find info on the DOT website but can only find info on re-licensing it after 12 months ownership..
I have bought a few things interstate, cars, bikes boats etc.
When factoring in the cost of the car allow about $1100 for transportation costs and be aware that once the car arrives here it is unlicenced. You will need to have it towed to your preffered address. If you drive the vehicle here with the interstate plates and have an accident, there is no insurance.
Once the car is here get a permit to drive the vehicle to an inspection centre (you need to book) and take the vehicle with the interstate licence papers and a receipt from the previous owner. The car will be inspected, if it passes you then pay the inspection fee and the stamp duty.
The traps are if the vehicle is modified in any way, what is allowable in one state does not mean it will be ok in this state.
I was rejected at the WA pits with a factory standard International Calais from QLD because the tyre placard did not match the actual rim size on the vehicle!!! Just bought the V8 SS tyre placard from Holden and took it back over the pits and it passed.
What type of car are you thinking of getting across?
It's messy if you haven't been the owner for 12 months or more in SA, I helped a mate sort out a similar thing last summer and Barry is on the money.
From what I understand because of an interstate technicality the moment you sign the SA transfer paper it is considered to be unregistered outside SA.
I think the short version, if it's a private sale you have to sign SA transfer papers then get it over here and register it but to move it around legally once you get here you either need a temporary permit which you can get from DPI online or an approved tow truck. Then it has to go over the pits and pay applicable fees.
Other option is if you know someone in SA you can borrow their address for 12 months, when you have qualified transfer it across to WA registration via the DPI process you have already looked at.
All very helpful info!! It's a wee 4x4 and should be completely bog standard!! So I'm wondering if I can drive it across the border into Eucla and have it inspected and registered there?? Should be able to book it in we'll ahead of the transfer and if need be the permit to move a vehicle are easily attained..
dpi wa say there's a 3 month grace with bringing a vehicle across on SA reg, but I'm assuming that is when it's registered to someone in SA and they move across?
