I understand that a sea breeze such as the Freemantle Doctor and the North Easter we get here in Newcastle is generated by cool air displacing hot air rising over land.

Why does it not come from the direct East or as in WA the West which would be the shortest route?

Could be talking out my a55, but may be due to the sea currents.

Lots of theories, most people agree that it's the same reason that cyclone winds don't just rush straight to the centre of the low pressure:

Hi Nebbian, Beersy, thanks for that. I just tried to red thumb myself for not doing a search first but you cannot rate your own posts.

Really interesting stuff. It has always fascinated me what is happening with the wind. When I first took up kiting I was on top of the Great Dividing range at Walcha and was constantly watching the tops of trees. I remain convinced that this is the most dangerous aspect to kiting, especially for beginners who are driving.

You can see the wind here sometimes, just sitting three to four hundred metres out while it is blowing off shore. My first experience with it was driving back to Stockton in an horrible hot westerly, the wind generator powered up, to find a great seabreeze over the beach less than two kilometes away.

Aint going to blow here today, beer time!

Thats the funny thing about the Seabreeze so i have learnt.
Was at a beach south of Perth recently and there was a stonking 20knot wind just offshore, like 200m.

Instantly thought that give it 20 mins and it will be on.

However the wise words from a friend prevented us from rigging up and nothing happend whilst we sat and watched.
The wind just stayed offshore with the occassional gust accross the beach.

The only thing left to do at this time was go to the pub for beer.
Two pints later it felt like the wind was on, rushed back to the beach, rigged up.

The wind was fanging like 20knots+ even contemplating my smallest kite
ended up on a 9m for 20 mins when the wind changed yet again and went offshore.
Luckily we were in and safe

Bizarre conditions never seen a breeze like it.

regarding the initial question :coriolis effect - the result of liquid/air moving across a curved surface that rotates once every 24 hours.

The same effect causes lows to spin clockwise in the southern hemisphere and anti clockwise in the northern.

and vice versa for highs.

lanno was 30 knots on thursday while Perth only got a weak seabreeze!
