From the source of all knowledge, wikipedia:

Auction sniping is the process of watching a timed online auction (such as on eBay), and placing a winning bid at the last possible moment (often seconds before the end of the auction), giving the other bidders no time to outbid the sniper. Some bidders do this manually, and others use software designed for the purpose. A bid sniper is a person or software agent who performs auction sniping.

There are also online sniping services, where the software agent is run from a website rather than the sniper's own computer. This decreases the failure rate of the snipe, because the website is expected to have more reliable servers that might be quicker to react.

If you put an auto bid on for $1,000,000 could you still get sniped?

eBay needs to introduce some measure where if there are > x numbers of bids in the last minute the auction is extended, like a real auction.

If the sniper's bid was $1,000,001 you would be sniped and not have the opportunity to bid $1,000,002.

But I guess you were only willing to pay $1,000,000 maximum for that item, weren't you?

Sorry guys but thats what i do Being from W.A. its good to because alot of the stuff finishes when most eastern staters are tucking them selfs into bed hoping they put in the winning bid...But I think the way the've set it up is that if you bid $100 dollars on an Item that is $50 then it only goes up to $50.50 and so on
I guess bid what you are willing to pay if it goes for more so be it..I guess I've be sniped as well nothing worse than being out bit by 50 cents..

i got sniped once but ended up with a second chance offer, which was good as it was the price i had bidded on, anyhow one has to wonder if some last minute bids are just people working for the seller to lift the price to ensnare snipers to a higher price...

I snipe manually, I have done this since before I even knew it had a name.
I refresh the auction until the last few seconds then jump in with a bid.
But could never figure out how people could consistently out bid me with one second remaing.
So I did some research and found that professional online sniping services exist.

At the end of the day, I only ever make one bid which I predetermine to be the maximum value of the item.
If someone is willing to pay more, so be it.

But it still sucks.

Guess you can be happy in the Knowlaged that most stuff on ebay can be bought cheaper from the shop specially after joe blow wants to charge $20 to send a tick tack from next door.....

I am a manual sniper, always have been since the first time I looked on eBay and thought "how dumb is that, everybody puts down the max they'd be willing to pay and it just inflates the price early"
I love it when I'm selling an item and there is say 10 watchers... 5 bidding slowly early on and another 5 just waiting.... then you know it will be a fight late on and a good price.

My main issue with eBay is their holier than thou attitude where they arbitrarily banned LEGAL items that I was selling, thus stuffing up an online busines I was starting. Mongrels

I collected inert ordnance like grenades, mortars, landmines, rounds, stuff like that. Very hard to find in Oz, but lots of collectors in oz want the stuff, and it grows on trees in USA and Europe but no many people know how to do the customs paperwork or can't be stuffed. Very profitable import business until ebay stopped it. W^nkers [}:)][}:)]

Russia's Spy Weapons Catalogue
By David Hambling June 05, 2008 | 6:57:00 AMCategories: Ammo and Munitions, Bizarro
All sorts of retailers will promise to sell you James Bond-style gadgetry. But Russia's lurch into aristo-capitalism means that the weapons from 007's old adversaries -- which once would have been kept strictly secret -- are now advertised in glossy catalogs like the one on Rosboronexport's web site.

Most of the content is standard military stuff, but the section on Special Weapons has some items which belong more in the hands of 007 than your average soldier. Planning a quiet assassination somewhere? How about the PSS handgun:

The PSS pistol arms Special Operations Forces and, therefore, is designed for attack and self-defence at short ranges when noiseless and flameless fire is vital. To this end the 7.62x42mm SP-4 round, which conceals exhaust gases in the case, is used for firing. Shooting is virtually noiseless. Absence of a silencer makes the pistol very compact, and thus convenient for covert transportation and always keeps it ready for use.

At just .7 kg and 165mm long, the PSS is certainly compact compared to any weapon with an external sound suppressor. If your target is wearing concealed body armor that will stop handgun bullets, then you might want the SR-1 9mm pistol:

For the time being, the SR-1 pistol makes one of the most formidable pistols in the world. In terms of lethality, a 9x21 armour piercing round is 2.5-5 times more lethal than a 9x19 Para one. The new 9x21 SP-10 round ensures reliable engagement of personnel by penetrating a flak jacket or a steel helmet at ranges of up to 100 m.

If you want the best of both worlds for silence and armor-penetration (and have a bit more room), you can pack the VSK-94 Special Purpose Silent Sniper rifle -– an unusual "rifle" in 9mm:

The VSK-94 special-purpose silent sniper rifle is designed to engage hostile personnel in flak jackets or inside vehicles when carrying out special operations ruling out noise and muzzle flashes. It is highly effective in urban warfare.

If you're looking at underwater operations, Thunderball-style, then you'll be wanting the 4.5mm SPP-1M underwater pistol or the 5.66mm APS underwater assault rifle we've mentioned previously for their advanced supercavitating bullets.

According to Rosboronexport, "when underwater, swimmer can fire from all positions, at surface targets as well." This must be quite a trick if you can take the refraction into account, but you'd certainly get the element of surprise.

But the weapon most likely to be copied by Q Division is the NRS-2 Scouting Knife:

The NRS-2 scouting knife is a combined sidearm of special scout units. The knife is designed to attack enemy in close-quarter combat with blade when stabbing or casting; it can also fire silently and without flash at a range of up to 25 m.

The NRS-2 has a single-shot firearm integrated in its handle. The barrel is in the back of the handle. The muzzle in the butt end is covered with a split rubber plug. The knife is aimed with the help of a notch in the crosspiece and a foresight.

No doubt there are more advanced weapons which did not make it into the catalog. But it's interesting to see what the Russians are up to –- and it would be even more interesting to know who they're selling them to.

I haven't bid on anything for a while but when I do I use EZsnipe -- cheap and easy but still won't guarantee you get it or don't pay too much.

Make sure you know what an item is worth because a I guy I know makes some good cash by selling cheap stuff to people who don't know how much and are too lazy to find out if they can actually buy it cheaper elsewhere -- "auction fever" I would call it.

I logged onto one service a while ago, they gave you 3 free snipes, then you had to join up. I used it once, then thought it unethical.
