Surfers Ear - Hi, I have 95% blockage and hence need the Operation. I am confused as to the best method. My ENT specialist only operarates from behind the ear, saying there is less chance of damage as they then chisel toward the front.

HOWEVER after reading some info on the net, some docs go thru the ear from front and just use a micro-chisel, saying the healing time is better and not as much risk. Also they now avoid drills so as to avoid deafening the ear????
HAS ANYONE LOOKED INTO THIS AND CAN OFFER ADVICE?

Does anyone know of a doc that does the op thru the ear in the Central Coast, NSW, Australia or maybe in Sydney?

I keep hearing horror stories about infection, second ops etc from behind the ear. Then there is the complications of potential taste nerve damage, face paraylsis, ringing in the ears. HELP..

I reckon most of us who have grown up surfing etc will need this surgery at some time so let us know what you learn.

Up to several months to heal after surgery...**** that.
Several months without surfing...I'd rather die.

replied to this a few times....get in a health fund for 12 months before unless you have a spare 12000 grand...get a number one all over pre surgery.. had both done within a week of each other...its not possible to have both done on the same day 4.5 hours on the table for one 5.5 hours for the other, mine were totally blocked again, but this only keeps you out of the water for 10- 12 weeks as opposed to doing one and then the other 12 weeks later which puts you out for half a year ...complain loudly to the doc so they give you the good painkillers regardless of whether you need them(stick the extra in your medical kit)... ...second go around for both ears had the first round about 20 years ago ....won't be going back for a 3rd go......chisels are apparently only good for semi blocked cases or as my ENT put it "cowboys" then again there is only one ENT guy where i live although this is his favourite op?%$
buy a nice shower cap
cheers good luck

Had one ear done, thru the canal but slit down between the lobe and the temple for easy access. FKN hurts was sore for weeks, but that kinda makes sense when you consider you've got some pratt chiselling out the inside of your head.
My left is now blocked 95+% and they're telling me to get that done too. For interests sake get a hearing test done and suss the difference between your "good" and "bad" ear.
At present there's only 3-5% diff between mine so farked if I'm gonna get the other done until I'm stone deaf.

I just had my right ear done on the 4 of feb and I was in the water surfing a month after the op.
No pain at all, hardly take any drugs, about a week after when to see the ENT, he took the bandage from inside the ear and had some antibiotics drops in for a week in case of infection. I did keep it clean and dry at all times and two weeks after I was in the water with blue tack for another two weeks and now all good, no infections. Going to do my left ear next year. I had three small stiches in my ear at the front for the first week, so I guess he drill through and some of the bandage inside was reabsorbed. Hearing is perfect too. Good luck !

I have been rather paranoid about my ears for a month or so now . At first my ears were blocked from gunk , but now clear . I still cant hear properly though through my right . After every surf I am 90% deaf for 2 days afterwards in the right . I have been surfing for 22 years almost every week .

Question - what are the initial symptoms that you guys got apart from hearing loss???

About that. Hearing loss and trapped water... suggest you get your GP to have a look - it's quite obvious with one of those 'ear canal looky thingies'...

I am into my 4th week after surgery to my left ear. The surgeon came in from behind and from all accounts has done a good job. I can get my ear wet next week for the first time. Two of my friends have had there ears drilled out through the canal and both have had to have the surgery again. One had the second op from behind and his ear is fine now and surfing like crazy.
My scarring is going down very quick and because its behind the ear, it will not be visible anyway.
The recovery from both surgeries is about the same time. By going in from behind, they can save more skin and apparently that means the chance of less infection.
I was in hospital overnight and back to work a few days later, albeit with a slightly swollen ear.
I'll be back in the water in another 5 weeks though as I'm now having to use Efudix to remove the sun damage on my face from 35 years of surfing. After a while they can't keep burning the keratoses off the forehead and cheeks, so now its the cream to remove it all.
All in time for my trip to Bali for my 50th.

Who was your ENT?

Thanks for all the replys, from what I can gather it seems like if the blockage is pretty bad, like maybe 95% (like mine) then they seem to go in from behind the ear, but if it is less then they go thru the ear. Can anyone clarify this?

I am not totally sure on this but it seems to make sense. I am off to France in September so I guess I should get it done ASAP so I have time to recover and get fully surf fit. My ENT guy has good reviews, and can fit me in early June. The only problem is I don't know anyone who has used him for this op.

Hopefully I can clarify why some are thru the ear and some behind. I will try and contact my ENT again before the op.

Any more info would be appreciated, Thanks.
