Has anyone moved from Brisbane to Sydney or vice versa?
What were your thoughts.

I've been in Sydney for the past 17 years and it's gone from good to in my view hard to be happy in, but it's hard convincing my wife to move. Her view is that everybody outside of Syd is an illiterate bogan and there's no work.
I've shown her stats using www.numbeo.com and www.abs.gov.au, but she aint buying. She's a project manager, and I'm technical consultant.

I was thinking of moving to somewhere like Ascott, and kiting at Nudgee or Shorncliffe, but I've been informed the wind is crap, the water is brown/polluted and it's full of sea lice and blue blubbers or blue something, and realistically speaking the closest place to kite is Moffat... this was from a Windsurfer though.

What's your view?

There's no good wind to be had north of the border. Plus stonefish, stingrays, stingers and other nasties. Spring and summer are hot, humid and sticky. The paint on your car will fade. Your wife will hate it so much divorce is a genuine prospect.

You're much better off down there.

Just show her a few houses you can afford in Brisbane... or Adelaide... or Perth... if you sell that Sydney place

Oh... and the age at which you can retire. After 17 years in Sydney, you could move to Tassie and retire now

Even better, move north to Mackay, you can buy 5 houses for the price of one Sydney house and live off of the income.

Lots of bogans, but some great people as well and no traffic, great kiting and fishing.

what your windsurfer mate tells you about Brisbane is true and the traffic to the Sunny/Gold coasts get worse every year

Same in Bris Vegas. Stay where you are. We are trying to attract more culturally diverse immigrants to Queensland.

Your presence would upset the balance.

I'm pretty sure she's filtering my realestate.com.au emails; I've shown her so many.
What about food in Brisbane... she loves cooking, and is always complaining about the quality of produce in Sydney.

We're nearing 50, but I reckon I'll die on the job... or getting there.

Shoot!! A meat pie costs you $10 in Brisbane these days and a butter box house in a bogan suburb costs $600,000.

Culture is non existant and we have a Labor government. Why would you want to live here??

Bali is a whole lot better alternative.

It will be no good for your wife if she wants to go shopping at normal shopping hours.
No good for you if you want to get on the water after work because it will be dark.
The water is full of stingers, sharks, crocs, cone shells, stone fish, rays, jellies and obese locals.
Out of the water it is full of snakes, spiders, lizards, cane toads and obese locals.
The food cant be too bad. After a few more Big Macs get consumed here we will shift the earths rotation.
There is not much to consult technically, or projects to manage as progress is frowned upon, unless it is a new coal mine.
I don't go to Brisbane unless I have to because you can only look at the arse end of the car in front of you so long before insanity kicks in.
We vote for people like Pauline Hanson & Bob Katter.
Us bogans can read (except for those that vote for Pauline and Bob).
We can easily spot the immigrants, so to fit in you may need to ink up and grow a mullet or at least an excessively long goatee to fit in (both you and your wife).

Hope this helps. See you soon.

What about Port Stephens? only 2 hours from Sydney by car (so wifey can still visit friends etc) or 45 minutes by plane, but it feels like a different country. The bay gets a pretty good breeze and there is not too many other kitters/windsurfers yet. The most i have seen on the same day is about 6, which in a bay that is twice the size of Sydney Harbour gives you plenty of room.
We moved up here 2 years ago from Cronulla and have no regrets. i still have to travel down to sydney 1 day a week for work and when i do it just makes me wish i moved out of sydney earlier. Plus we went from a unit to a house so that was a huge improvement.

I'm sold... but as you know everyone has irrational biases towards other groups and I'm just trying to find an angle to convince her to overcome them. We both like animals... but she heard about fire ants.

It once took me 9hrs because there was an accident, and they diverted traffic through the old pacific hwy... but it is a nice enough place... love the dunes.

Of course she thinks that because Sydney is where all the best people are and it's the best city in the world because that's where she is and she needs to tell herself that (like we all do) and for that to be true other places have to be worse, especially all other places.

The actual, real truth is Sydney is a sleepy backwater that closes at 8pm and is full of illiterate bogans.

Nobody in Sydney even wants to contemplate the idea that Sydney has been left behind by the other cities, and nobody would ever know because they never leave.

Let me put it this way: nobody that leaves Sydney ever comes back.

My greatest fear is that Sydneyites discover how much better it is "up the coast".

Been back and forward between sydney and brisvegas a few times over 16 years on east coast.

Sydney was getting seriously hard work with the crowds and traffic so I did the sell in sydney thing and moved back home to WA with a truckload of cash left over once we rebought. Its amazing more arent doing it if you got any kind of work flexibility.

Brissie is a bit far from "good" coast but the goldie ticks all the boxes bar the culture thing. Sadly the commute to brizzy is alot slower these days though.

Woolongong (northern beaches) would be one place i would look if i were you - 60km to CBD with a train line so the mrs doesnt miss out on the sydney "culture". Epic surf and good kiting. Still cash in your pocket after the move too.

good luck

Stayed at a friends house in Stanwell (30km before Wollongong)... train to Sydney would take 2hrs... I was late every day, bcos I just can't wake up so early.
If I could think of a new income source which didn't rely on large corps. I could move to Coffs. I tried day trading for a while but lost my shirt.

yeah i here ya mate. Trick with the train is to get the express from Thirroul. was around 1.10mins to central from memory. Im doing the trading from margs now and its defo cost me some $s being away from the city and outside "the loop" but still streets ahead overall.
