To Me (every one see's things differently)

The silence and head nodding was Abbot
trying to keep his cool and not say anything else he would
regret like "Freak of you freaking idiot"
and to me it looked like he was ready to kick the living poo out of him.
To me he had steam coming from his ears...

He might have some nervous disorder that causes the shake? He seems to use pauses to manage maybe a stutter, so that could be part of the shaking...either way the journo was out of line, as is 'typical' with the current insensitive plebs that use shock journalism to climb the career ladder.

Whenever I did anything bad as a kid my dad used to get that look about him - just before giving me a hiding (which mind you that reporter deserved)

100%
whether you like or hate him

1/ this is someones family-not a circus sideshow to sell a few newspapers or lead the 6pm news

2/ In context it was a perfectly Australian response-as shown by the Commanders ready agreeance.

3/ Abbott could have already tried to turn it into the "they didnt have the right equipment" circus but he didnt, which was precisely what the comment was referred to.

4/ Someone should "out" the journalists who wheel out the budgie smuggler jokes-cos Id expect them to be in better shape than Mr Abbott. Post some pics of these journalists-they must be fit bastards.

Personally, Abbott would have gone up in my estimation if he had just head butted that dickhead then given him a couple to go on with. I think the question of weather he was insensitive is a total crock but Abbotts reaction was extraordinary.

Keating would have given the reporter a verbal dressing down that he would remember for life

Somehow I just can't respect Tony. I expect my prime minister to have an excellent grasp of the English language... maybe I'm just old fashioned.

I think Abbott could have given a verbal assault of pretty high order but he was afraid it would be used against him in the context that he has already been insensitive to the death of an Australian solider in Afghanistan.

Wow some soldiers pay the highest price possible so we can fly the flag over there.

I wonder what would have happened if Julia had responded in the same way as Tony did, I think we have lower expectations of our male pollys, though I cant imagine Howard making that sort of gaff.

Can you really expect anything better from channel 7 news? Or channel 7 anything for that matter.
In my opinion it's a total waste of airspace and the report which the now infamous Mark Riley has put together is a serious indictment on his character and value as a reporter of real news.
I suppose the network will keep him on as they seem to excel in that sort of reporting.
There is no doubt that either he or channel 7 or more likely both, were using the sad situation of the death of one of our soldiers overseas to push their own agenda of scoring a 'free kick' against a political leader.
If Mark Riley or channel 7 had the slightest concern for the feelings of the family of the deceased they would not have done this.

I have long ceased to watch anything on channel 7 because they are serial offenders in this regard, and so I also missed this report. I'm glad I did.

The only thing that cheers me on this is that I am a firm believer in "what goes around, comes around".
Nobody escapes this life without paying in full for the hurt they willingly inflict on others.

I would hate to be racking up the account that I see some people willingly stacking up against themselves. They will have to pay it with interest. All of it!

No pun intended but Abbott is hardly a saint, and he is very well versed in every dodgy trick in the political game.

Seems he can dish it - but just can't take it. Well not without blowing his cool and attempting to menace/threaten whoever dares to disagrees with him.[}:)]

It seems he was warned about the content and not ambushed at all. I guess he just doesn't expect to have to answer for his (ingratiating) actions, he's not in govt after all.

Abbott is a loose cannon, bible bashin, clown IMO.

The actual comments were a rubbish Ch7 beat-up and Ch 7's handling was probably less sensitive to the family than Abbott's words. Abbott's reaction is the most telling of his character tho.

I reckon Abbot's response was ok, at least it was not the usual political doubletalk that we have become accustomed to from both sides...

LOL @ Bob Hawke, he was a dinosaur, but the right man for the job at the time. I sometimes wonder how folks would take him in this day and age, maybe "it's time" for a comeback!

As for Berlusconi, you have no idea how lucky we are not to have the likes of him anywhere near our political system.

His silence made me wonder if his advisers are working for Malcolm Turnbull or the PM.

Or is he such a loose cannon that he ignores the advice given to him by his staff, deciding instead that his approach (intimidation) is better. After all, he knew that it was coming some 2 hours before meeting the Journo for the interview and it must have been discussed.

No doubt, Abbott is a smart man (and a surfer to boot), but he does himself no favours after that latest effort.

Admittedly the media can get out of hand, but they also can do a pretty good job at making a politicians look stupid. And yesterday was a good example - Abbott did not look or act like an alternative Prime Minister.

Others (government and opposition) would have given an answer that would have sent the reporter packing, with a quick follow up to the owner of the station to remind them who is boss.

Definately a case of the tail wagging the dog.

I thought with all that head nodding he was setting up a Dim Mak Death Touch - getting the vibrations just right and then bammm. Riley is obviously one very lucky journo that Abbott decided to pull out at the last minute
