As the seabreeze fades away, and the days get shorter, What are people going to do with all that spare time? I for one will be dusting off the surf board and oiling the chain on the mountain bike. Whats your winter thrill?
Windsurf ! in those winter storms I reckon some of the best sailing is in winter, Dark skies, 30 knott winds, big swell, hardly anyone else out....awesome
Yeah I'm with you Mike Gonna get the dust off the surfboard(s) and get into some of that good old winter swell. This has been my first season windsurfing and I'm absolutely stoked - 100% hooked. Been surfing for about 12 years now and get spoiled on trips to Gnarloo, Quobba etc and then get back to Perth and think Stuff this. I couldn't be buggered fighting 50 other wave starved maniacs for waist high dribble, the vibe in surfing has gone really bad. So I went and bought me some windsurfing gear and wondered "What have I been doing all my life". Always plenty of wind in summer and i don't have to get up at 4 am to beat the grommets to the waves (or lack of). At least all the softcocks stay in bed on those crisp offshore winter mornings, only us hardcore surfers can handle it I don't know about sailing winter storms, get a bit more confidence up first and see what happens Anyway enough rambling Later
But Cliffo don't put your windsurf board back in the shed.... winter is an awesome season for windsurf when you know where and when to go.... Lots of people only windsurf in summer and it is such a waste of wind and WAVES!!! Because it's your first season I would just encourage you not to become a Summer windsurfer only!!! Keep going full on this winter and you'll be a "master" next summer (could still keep your mentor (Hardie is listening)...I dont' want to offend anyone here...ReeeeeeeSCPECT !!!! )
In winter I tend to get my Micrami set out, and when I get bored with that I do crochet
When I'm being serious I windsurf, best wavesailing occurs in winter, on WSW, Dead West can be OK too.
There are some great slalom spots on WNW, and NW. Smilies indicate my rating for whatever little that counts. Those of you in the know, will understand perfectly, for a reasonable fee, I may be willing to share some info.
well im kinda on the same line as cliffo as we do surf and sail together but you have got me double stoked leski and speaking to hardie he has got me tripple stoked and coz ive payed my fee ive been enlightened and im gonna tear that a****n place apart this winter!!! I GOT SO MUCH LIFE RUNNING THROUGH MY VIENS (greenie singing in next Australian Idol) ...and thats where i get my stoke from!!! so wheres this crazies north freo
Bluejuice, you do have a good point. What frustrates me about sailing in winder, besides the cold, is the waiting around for the conditions to be right. The forecast can be so wrong when it comes to winter storms. 20 - 30 knots can end up being 5 - 10. I'd rather wave sail at Gerro in summer. Besides Perth isn't really known for it's waves, and when there are waves, every man and his dog is out there. I hate the crowds.
mike here's winter my tips. Ignore the first strong wind warnings that are put out for the first few fronts they never get that strong. I also think the weather bureau cover there arse incase the front suddenly speeds up so add about 8hrs to when they say the winds will be strong, avoid the river it gets to flukey and that fresh h2o is really cold. Watch the map really closely to suss out how close the isobars are apart and how quickly the front is moving. Weekdays are usually pretty quiet there's also less kites out in winter too!
Cliffo, good idea getting into windsurfing, and glad your really liking it. I used to sail at City Beach and see surfers out at the groins fighting for wind waves, while I was blasting in 25 knots. Could never understand why more surfer didn't sail aswell? There are WAY MORE windy days in Perth than good swell days.
