Yeah I'm going in 5 weeks.. hope it improves. Is this what conditions are normally like in June for Oz and NZ or is it shaping as a bad season?

Apparently last year was good.

Go to Japan if you want to ski. We were there in March and the snow was about 3 meters deep. We went to Hakuba which is not that far from Tokyo.

I've been lurking on the skiing forums, and a snowless June means nothing.

go to www.ski.com.au . There is a huge website with cameras, massive weather forecasts (and some really cool ones). And quite a large forum, with lots of old people that seem to know what they are talking about.

Indeed, with 'seem' being the operative word.

Been to Nz the last two years and wasn t that good but still better than australia. Going again in august so should have a good base by then, but still a chance to find rocks and cane my board! never in japan.
I go to Japan every year as I used to live there, Hokkaido is where the best powder is and the resort town Niseko is called Little Australia in Japan. Its very sad because people thin they are having a japanese holiday.

If they were having a Japanese holiday wouldn't they be at work?

well it may only be a cigarette and a quick look around.

But seriously having lived the life style they have plenty of public holidays and long weekends so theres time to use but not for long periods. They make the most of their free time and travel in japan is fast, easy and cheap, opposite to australia, so you can get alot done in a short time. I have tried to incorporate that into my life where before i may have had more time but did very little with it. 4 days boarding was enough at 350 bucks everything included (flights, lift pass, acomodation, breakfast dinner) makes NZ and Aus a complete joke. Plus the areas are HUGE.

Yeah I'm to NZ in August too (Q/town & Wanaka) and off to Niseko in late Jan - never been. Bit turned off by the amount of Aussies but I guess thats the price you have to pay! I certainly won't be thinking I'm experiencing a true Japanese experience, I just want to board in some nice powder! Cultural experiences can wait a few years when my body packs up.

yeh, didnt mean it to sound to exclusive, I just found it weird living there then turning up to niesko and have a bunch of aussies yelling at me on the slopes and at other times telling me how cool it is we (aussies) are bringing the world to japan when the last thing I want to see is every country like a mcdonalds franchise. And thats bogus anyway they are so far ahead in almost every way we may get there in 50 years.

For Boarding you can t go past it. You'll love it.
South island NZ is cool too but the snow, hospitality and size of the areas doesnt compare.

There's two trains of thought. One, the old codgers reckon its gonna be a once in fifty years dump. Two, the crows are still up here in the mountains (I'm at Charlotte Pass) and they were definitely gone at this time last year, the old guys last year said the willy wagtails were up higher than they have ever been and they came early before the end of the season.
