Thumbs-up and thumbs-down don't really serve much of a purpose at the moment. Sure, they may flag an individual post as being popular or unpopular, but I think that they could be used to a much greater extent.

Here are some of my ideas:

Idea 1: Filter out posts below a certain thumbs threshold.
Like slashdot.org, posts that fall below a user configurable threshold are not shown to the user. The user would chose how many thumbs down a post would need to be given before they don't want to see it. The default for an unregistered user could be set to say 5 thumbs down, which would prevent casual passers-by from being mis-informed by bad posts.

Idea 2: Have a persistent "credibility" rating for each user based on thumbs history
A credibility (or is that popularity) score for each user could be calculated from the ratio between total thumbs for all their posts vs. their total number of posts.

EG: DL has made 200 posts with a total of 30 thumbs-up and 10 thumbs-down. This gives a net thumbs score of 30-10 = 20. Divide this by total posts = 20/200 = 10%.
From this, DL would be given a credibility score of 10%.

Brucie/Bigboard/etc with 2 posts and -10 thumbs would have a credibility of -500%

This credibility score could be listed underneath each user's avatar where the stars used to be. This would give some incentive for users to make posts that attract thumbs-up, thereby providing more quality content for the seabreeze forums.

Idea 3: Filter posts from users with a credibility score below a certain threshold.
Following on from the previous idea, each user could then set a preference to hide posts by any other user with a crebibility of less than a certain threshold.

This would serve to block posts from users that have a demonstrated history of bad posts. As with the first idea, the default for an unregistered user could be set to say -100% credibility, which would block posts from serial bad posters from the general public.

Thoughts?

How about being able to see, if you posted a comment, who the people were who gave you thumbs up / down. This way you could thumbs down comments from people who thumbs downed you., and be nice to people who liked your posts. [}:)]

Easty, I don't agree with that. As you said if you saw who thumbed you down you'd get into a flame war with them... voting should always be secret imo.

And DL, what about those people who started posting before there were any thumbs? And who have over a thousand posts? It would seem that this would mean they would always stay neutral.

You idea of filtering posts that get below a threshold is a good one though. Something like how slashdot does it would be great. Laurie could even put in some ajax so that if a post is -5 then it is 'collapsed', and you could have the option of clicking on an 'expand' button.

thumbs crap is the stupidest idea any forum creator could ever in a million years even slightly consider would be an even miniscule good thing to do!

it suppresses free speech through manipulation by users with multiple identities thumbing to their own agendas/commercial interests.

p155 it off

When the thumbs first appeared, I thought that they were a great idea. Now I realise that it means I'm less likely to respond to a post. If I agree with a post or response I will give it a thumbs up, disagree gets a thumbs down. I think I'll avoid them now and just reply!

Interesting comments!

DL/Nebbs - some great ideas. The slashdot.org system is amazing, and the level of activity on that site is though the roof. Keep the ideas coming; they all go into the melting pot of the next upgrade.

it suppresses free speech through manipulation by users with multiple identities thumbing to their own agendas/commercial interests.

The 'commercial interests' side of things has been identified, and addressed in an upgrade we installed last week, so thats taken care of. I'd be surprised if the thumbs were "powerful" enough to manipulate free speech. If you feel this is not the case, post here, or send me an email.

A great feature of the thumbs is they give voice to the spectators - just like in real life where a bunch of crew standing around talking, it lets people have their "visual" input (shocked face/cross arms/walk away).

As someone who reads all posts every day, I would say that most posters are reasonable people most of the time, with the rare dispute. The thumbs are a great addition and add to the entertainment that forums are!

Isn't part of posting in the forums is expecting that people might disagree with you?

Definitely keep the thumbs up and thumbs down as it is a good way of getting feedback to the originator that you agreed / disagreed with his point of view without having to post a reply.

I also think however, that there should be a minor addition, and that is for posts where you think it deserves more than a thumbs down.
How about a button we can click to send "the forks" or "the bird" to someones post.
Maybe it could just be that if a post received 5 thumbs down, the icon would automatically turn into "the bird".
If it was "the bird" then the finger could get longer depending on how many people send it.

It could just be appended to the bottom of their post maybe.

It would enable us to give some of the posts the critique that they so richly deserve!

(which reminds me,.. where's red5 and user lately? I'm beginning to miss their deep and meaningfull contributions. They were always so interlectually stimulating and spiritually uplifting! )

And Laurie, we desperately need a big tongue in cheek smiley. I could have used it right here!!

And a dummy spit smiley.

And a violently throwing up smiley. I've seen them on other sites and they are animated and choice bro!

And while you're at it, a rolly eyes 'who me?' smiley,.. and a,... and a,.... Yeah!

I've found one problem with it is that if you say one thing someone doesn't agree with, then everypost you say for the rest of that topic, and sometimes other topics, is downed thumbed by that person. Therefore even when you have said something that is good, it is still bad thumbed.

So i guess what i'm really trying to say is that when someone doesn't like another person, they down thumb them regardless of what they have said, even if it is really good.

Cheers

There will always be rude people and all of us have a little rude in us so bad behaviour is going to happen. There's not much of it though. By and large we're a pretty restrained bunch.

I was very critical of the thumbs device when it first appeared on the forum.
I openly gave the thumbs the finger.
My opinion at the time was that thumb-clicking discouraged DISCUSSION.
I viewed it as a lazy response and a nothing reply.
Text has juice, it's what forums are made of.
The pen is mightier than the sword, words cut......
a red or green stain in a box says little, means ???????????

You see,
I could have just clicked a thumbs-down on DL's opening post, like so many others have.
But instead I opted to write a reply rather than speak in icons.
I'm talking (thinking).....not clicking.

However,
I can now see the logic behind the thumbs device.
Maybe thumbs were really a smart marketing strategy.
A means to encourage forum-lurkers into the Seabreeze fold.
A clever feature of forum-introduction.
Of course, you can do both.
You can click icons and you can write text.
But just talk.

I would prefer a smite button for people who take a joke too far/show no originality.
I think that thumbs are a good way of telling if people are awake to the issues going on.
For example, you wish to tell someone that they are causing problems by their actions, those who have no idea about the situation will hit the thumbs down and thus take the credibility away for your call to change.

now, time to go check out what this slashdot thing is

How about sub threads, ala Digg, instead of the 'quote' button. Would just need a parentId field (in theory).

Would make things a bit neater and people could go rambling off sub-topic.
