Practice

Find some darts that are the correct weight for you

Practice

Hold the dart like a pencil

Practice

Watch your dart as you throw

Practice

Good luck

Like any sport it is correct clothing also, so as to not restrict movement.
Trackies, thongs, and singlet is the go. Have a flannie to put on between rounds so you don't get to chilly in the singlet

I played darts for years.
Some tips i was taught -
get darts to suit - so right weight, good flights, sharp and feel good in the hand etc
Imagine your throwing arm elbow is resting on a bar when you're throwing.
Dink lots of beer.

Not as silly as it sounds. I find a relaxed state of mind, not focusing too much on the technique, and I hit more of what I'm aiming for than earlier in the evening. Stress out about missing and you'll keep missing.

I hit triple 20 consistently. About 1 in 50 shots regular as clockwork. Try aiming at any number other than 20. Works for me.

If your right handed make sure you buy right handed darts

I think it's like golf... Just need to put the hours in, and you'll get better.

I played a stack of darts at 28 Pacific Street Manly. Around the clock was usually fun. But we had another game called "Killer".

Killer:
1) Everyone throws 1 dart, and which ever number you hit, that's your number.
2) You start with 3 or 4 points, and if your number gets hit, you lose a point. If your double gets hit, you lose 2, and if your triple is hit, I think you lose 3. Get to Zero points, and you are "killed"
3) Can't remember if you could recharge yourself, for hitting your own number...

You can use left hand darts but you have to move the board to the other side of the room. If your into championships take both types.

Once you get good at darts you'll never miss the waste paper basket again - an added bonus

I used to play a bit of darts... Most these blokes have hit the nail on the head. two things though that haven't been mentioned.

I never got used to the pencil grip. Instead I three middle fingers on shaft, thumb opposing the three, and the tiny bit of finger nail of my little finger along side the pint. that was my grip.

Secondly, line yourself up perfectly side on. I used front foot pointing towards board and back foot sort of 45 degrees. But the elbow, wrist and eye and dart were all dead straight 90 degrees. That way, you'd only stray you length, not your line.

Stand closer to the dart board.

I always find that if I am stood less then one arms length from the board I can usually hit whatever I want to, with the added bonus that you don't have to let go of the dart, so improving the health and safety of spectators.

Or - try using longer darts. Why not try using dart that is 18 feet long, allowing your feet to remain behind the line, but the advatages of the above still coming into play.

Can't find a dart long enough ? - simply find a mast that is stuck together, duct-tape a nail to the front and glue a peacock to the back and voila - one very long dart. Do this 3 times and you have a matching set.

Make sure no one is standing near the dart board when throwing, I've seen quite a few people in the front bar pissed as with darts stuck in them.
