As a rusted on left winger I was surprised at Abbott. I thought he performed very well ( much to my disapointment). Don't get me wrong I could never vote for him and the whole idea of a return to a lib/ national party government fills me with deep depression but he's done well, definitely a conviction politician.

Like Gillard last week, I think he did well in the circumstances but it would have been nice to have a few more tough questions. He also got a very easy run in the people's forum on Sky News earlier in the week whereas Gillard did get some tough grilling. Even so, Tony stuffed some of that (completely fumbled the ball on questions around broadband and video game ratings... looks like he's had some serious briefing sessions since then) where Gillard I thought did very well.

The interviews on Lateline with two of the independants were really good. No wonder those blokes get re-elected. They seemed completely grounded in what's important for their part of the country. Maybe we should vote for them?

Hmmm.... Greenpat, Laurie... this is not politics, it's commenting on the personal performance of two people who just happen to be politicians, OK??

It is todate the biggest non event -- Sadly. The paradox is how scripted the audience has become - did the powers that be Q&Aing need to worry about an out of the box question?? Nah not a chance. I watch the 4 corners before hand and gave up after the Vietnam vet with a gay son "Asked for marriage rights for his kid" and got "ummm ummm ummm no it is not marriage" - but it is not the biblical sense they strive for it is the legal rights which are enshrined along with marriage but so often overlooked.

Talk of environment and carbon pollution. Abbott has his 5% down by 2020 - and does not vary from that - ask does that mean 3% by 2018 with 280,000 immigrants year on year?? Well the answer is.. "By 2020 5% down" - it is an advertising mantra with no substance. As for clean coal - ahh - Slush puppie with no ice - well there is a -- just maybe on that one - running the exhaust gases thru' biosphere with our wonderful world of bugs at work is looking promising - very promising - but might prove too cheap and be overlooked for the pump it underground and believe in the fairies as long as it cost big bucks brigade.. (I used to do geology so am familiar with the concepts required).

As for the other side - better not start....

At least last election you saw most of the front bench on the hustings you knew Maxine Mcqueueueueue, Swan around and that shadow boxing head below the trenches until the fights over - treasurer all Costed up peter,
How(i would (as long as it is not ICC)) against past used by date 07 - even some interest in the clean shaved cooruuuuunning late night oil burner to name a few...

This time around they have to drag the old toy box out ( Not) and dust off the H aaawwrrrrkkksss (me re-write of history) and the Mark Howzz me 4 the best behaved Mate ham. And The best mentor ever (how to U turn wooden boats 101 for a budget price of $297,000 per person per month[}:)][}:)])

The circus reminds me of the big bull statue going in to Birchip up Mallee way What a massive set of sack marbles on that number - shame no picture to make the point - but did U get a look at!!!.

All day every day they rush around with 6+ staffers and upwards of 40+ media...
Imagine "Hello Joe my name is "Let me spend alot in your marginal seat" can we have a normal conversation.. Well hello!! possibly 2 ordinary bods on the street and this traveling fish tank gasping for oxygen -- What a shame.

Organise some soap boxes in a park in advance and at least have a balance of numbers some fresh air and some genuine interaction.

But it is so bland in the last to make a mistake race that the stunned mullet expression of the electorate this last week might -- just might see some real philosophy some real passion some none forum agenda agenda.
And then may be Gruen and chase again on Wednesday night might just some it up.
Safe seat electorates are frustrating places at times..

Psst If it is another NW'ly 15+ on Saturday I am out the country being an Aqua plow - definitley vote below the line for the senate - no bicarmel state politics in QLD is a shocker.

I'm with Logman. Mr Rabbit surprised me with some good answers (thinking mat. leave here) on a few items.

Couldn't vote for him/his party as there are still a number of items in his back pocket, that were kept very quiet, that steer me well away from Rabbit/Libs ie immigration(ordinary from both Libs and Lab) , separation of church/state/schools and equality/marriage despite sexual bias are biggies for me.

Thought he got equally easy time of it from Tony (as did Julia Goolia) but agree some of the scripted audience (thinking the train smash of the 1st girl who stuttered through - most likely - her dad's Lib loving prepared question) were shockers, but hey there are laways gonna be weeds, roses and thorns in those scenarios.

EDIT:
BIT I would love to see a 3-way REAL debate, not a 2-way status quo pre-prepared ramble.

Says a lot that the two majors are sh!t scared Greens will hold the BoP, but aren't prepared to let the public hear the Greens answer the same questions that Lib/Lab get to accross all networks in prime time.

Both are waaayyyy too scared, and ultimately know they are both likely to lose votes, if the greens got an equal footing. Makes a mockery of our aledged democracy.

Below the line if you want maximum affect fro sure.

It is interesting to see/hear the areas Tony is passionate about - clearly paid maternity leave is one of these areas.

Tony seems to be a guy who will be more hands-off in areas that are outside his core interest areas, and is happy to take advice from other ministers.

Kevin Rudd was known as a notorious micro-manager, had to be responsible for everything. Julia Gillard seems to be similar, she often says things like the following:
- I will...
- My government will...
- The Gillard government will...

I think the PM has to act as a leader, take advice on decisions, rather than acting on everything themselves...
