In the recent stormy weather in Perth, a couple mates and myself noticed waves were breaking over the local Marina breakwater.

So we got into our wetties and ran out to the breakwater for a closer inspection of mother nature.

Try that at the Newcastle break-wall in a big swell and you will make the news (have seen up to 13m swell, yes thats right, hit the wall) and those rock move! if you are in the way you die. [}:)]

Australia used to be all about irresponsible actions, so it is cool to see some dudes getting back into it! Looks fun. I've seen some kids doing similar stuff at Coffs. It wasn't 13 metres but still cool.

The 13 meter event was many years ago (long before the Pasha bulka got washed ashore and I think bigger then that event but true. I think it was the biggest swell ever recorded in the area (could be wrong about a record but not the height). Would have been around 1990-1995 I think. My brother and I and another bloke actually when out from behind the northern break-wall on sailboards. I ventured past the end of the wall only once on the day and have never been so scared in my life. waves were breaking everywhere (places we had never seen them break before) and there was almost no wind at all in the troughs and 30 knots plus on the crests.

The other guy who was out (will know who he is if he reads this) was out alone and we only knew he was there because he's gear washed up right infront of us as we were scoping the entry and exits. For 5 mins we thought we had scored a full rig then he washed up a bit battered but ok hows that for irresponsible?

Ahhh boys after my own heart. The Aussie larrikin laughter at its best
Some will tut tut you guys, but adventure always gets the do gooders and the tut tuts swanning along for the ride.
Keep safe
I am pissed I didn't think of it myself and head on down there.

Hey cheers for the comments fellas.

It breaks over the breakwater a few times a year. I first saw it happening 6 years ago and said to myself, "the next time that happens I'm bringing my wettie and will attempt to get close to the wave action."

Six years ago I told my mates what the go was down at the marina during a storm and received no interest or blank looks. I went out by myself the first few times and scared the bejesus out of myself.

Again I told the story to an unreceptive audience.

Finally convinced a couple mates to check it out 3 years ago. One of them got close but soon deviated to the warmth of the Sea sports club for a couple pints. The other was a photographer and took snaps instead of getting wet.

Chucked the photos online and they generated an encouraging response.

It felt like I was Jeff Clark. Except I'm no legendary big wave surfer, it wasn't Mavericks and the waves weren't big.

Now that the word is out on seabreeze there could be 100 people crowded behind that breakwater during the next storm, all jostling for the best position.

Some people I once knew once drove all the way to Easkey in Ireland for a bit of surfin' and Guiness drinkin'.

They arrived at night and being all excited knowing a big swell was around they drove down onto the harbour wall. The wall isn't very long but has two steps running along it, so they climbed out of the car and stood on the top step and peered over the wall into the darkness.

Whilst still trying to work out what that 'whooshing' noise was, the wall of white water appeared in front of them splitting the darkness. In a split second they instincively ducked and sheltered under the lip of the wall on the upper step and watched helplessly as the wall of water crashed over their heads and pounded into the side of their car.

The force was so great it shoved the car 3 foot sideways and towards the drop off the inside edge of the wall in the ocean.

Without too much further ado they jumped back into the car and reversed the **** out of there before the next wave hit.

Retiring to the pub with a pulse of 360 bpm and brown underpants they commenced the drinkin' part of their trip

The Easkey harbour wall now has traffic bollards across it so you can't make that mistake anymore
