An awesome competition is being run by an Iconic Australian sound gear company called RØDE.
(they make awesome mics and accessories for those of you into any production)

Its a 2 minute short competition - which is great cos i like short snappy edits.

I thought i would enter - more for the process than through any hope of winning!

its a little story about my journey getting in to video production with Reflex Films and some of the worlds that decision opened up for me

If you are in to video production - and with the advent of GO Pro mania i know there are a few of you here -you may get something out of it - there is a little bit of windsurfing, Rc flying and other action in there.

Check out the group on vimeo (Rode Rockumentary) - there are some fantastic entries that will inspire you to go out and shoot some stories if you are of a film making bent

Roll on Psych Mic :

For any video producers out there you should consider entering too as there are some great prizes - but you will have to be quick as the deadline is 11.59 pm aest friday the 31st August - but its only a 2 minute flick - that wont take long - right ?

Cheers - to be honest i was kind of expecting to get slammed a bit on this forum but was hoping the piece might speak to a few creative people out there.

And as proof that a great idea trumps everything (but good production values make a great idea soar) here is my favourite entry in the RØDE competition

Hi Matt
The options for cameras now is just amazing
Yesterday I saw this new Sony camera
pro.sony/en_AU/?sonyref=www.pro.sony.com.au/product/resources/en_AZ/pdf/2012/NEX_FS700Brochure_PSAP.pdf
Looks real nice and can shoot up to 960 fps in bursts. Looks a little cheaper than the canon 300 C and they say will upgrade to 4K
The PMW F3 is also an awesome little camera. They had 6 of these on "The Shire"

Nice little video.

Great - thanks - love what creativity & stunning (normal!!) new equipment can do.
Just so U know.... how far equipment has come.

My 2nd summer job as an Hang gliding instructor also involved taking video...
So you had a camera about the size of the ones U c on the news shots - big but portable - shoulder mounted.. the but(t) factor was it required a life support structure to make it work - so the recording was on to a video recorder - straight to the VCR tape - think the early ones which went under your telly = mid size desktop PC, and then the battery pack which was the same size again but weighed in at 2 slabs of beer so thankfully the lense was good - editing well no idea - it was a hang-gliding job and late 70's (psst pre PC's = first cut specialist)!!

Being able to load and play with digital is liberating - making a living out of it - sounds great - but still requires talent - give us some more insight's...

Yet to read the competition entry criteria - based on 2 minutes well spent Y/N - You will be in there with your entry -

Cheers

hi Ian - i expect to see a ton of fs700s out there soon.

The cool thing is that since i got my humble little DSLR (Panasonic GH2 ) and some fast lenses my new camera fascination has largely been halted

Lensing and image quality is as good as anything i have seen out of a red - and you would have to have a really trained eye to pick it from an arri - and even then you probably wouldnt.

Its really liberating for any film maker on a budget.

My first helmet cam set up (pre go pro) was a bullet cam into a back pack with a video camera recording the signal. I would use this to record windsurfing shots

I remember when the zip from the back pack came undone and it filled up with water - nearly drowning me in the process! We got it so easy these days for sure!

Hey Ian,

looking to pick the brains of a sound pro such as yourself

what is the best shotgun mic for under $300 dollars ?

I have been rocking the RODE video mic for the last 6 years - and its great - but i am sure you could do magic with your gear - i am really starting to listen to how mics pick up voice tones in interviews - especially when they are 6ft out from the subject - i think thats where a good shotgun really starts to pay the bills

is there such a thing as a rifle mic ?

Have you used any of the newer Rode gear ?
and any other sound hardware tips would be really appreciated

and finally -any tips for getting punchier interview / vocal audio in post?

Hi Matt
I've been using The Rode NTG3 as my main work horse mic for the last 2 years or so. I think its as good as most other Mics. The only mic that I would replace it with is the Sanken CS3 but thats about $2k, it is an amazing mic. The recordist on Packed to the Rafters uses the CS3 and some times I can't believe the results they get with it even when its pointed at the back of an actors head.

I also have a couple of the Rode Lavaliers that are good, sound nice and mix well with a shot gun. I still prefer the Sanken cos11 more because of the lower cable noise and the connection on the rode called "MiCon" can give trouble.

Love the sound of the Rode NT1A for voice overs. Sounds Awesome when run through my Sound Devices pre amps but a bit Ordinary when it runs through my PSC pre amps.

In terms of a Rifle mic or long shot gun you may fine a few 816 floating around cheap. Rode have also just released a NTG8 that I have not used but will look at this week. There are also The Sennhieser Mkh 60 and 70

Another DOP asked me about the Sony ECMVG1 Electret Condenser Microphone that is going for less than $300 at B&H New York. I don't know this mic but think its more of a Hyper cardioid than a true shoot Gun.

PM me your phone number and we can talk more about techniques but the only good way to get good sound is to employ a soundie, You as director interviewer and Dop have enough to do

A big thanks reflex. You seem to have promoted our fading windsurfing sport I wish at some stage i could of been in the water in certain conditions. It boggles my mind. RESPECT.Hope you continue to document the waterman that make this sport like many others extreme.

Hi Ian,

cheers for your input- will be in touch soon.

Hey Buster - Windsurfing - fading ? not where we sail-more numbers on the water than ever - and growing!

Like many of the other cool sports on here(like Surfing, Supping and Kiting) windsurfing is one of the coolest things you can do in life!
