Well kind of.

I know this will appeal to only a few Seabreeze members (fellow camera nerds like me).

If you haven't already seen it, a few days ago the Magic Lantern team of camera "reverse engineer'ers" managed to get continuous RAW video recordings at 24p and above from 5dmk3, 5dmk2 and 600d, and other EOS cameras to follow - and the whole thing is somewhat likely to turn the pro video camera market on it's head.

It's relatively easy to use and has a perfectly workable processing workflow.

I've tested it on the 5d mk3 and mk2, and mk2 has much more aliasing than the mk3.

Presently a very fast CF or SD card is needed - 90mB/s write speed if you want to record full HD 1920 x 1080 continuously. The firmware is improving daily and eventually may not need such fast cards.

This is a very short clip from today at Wellington Point here in QLD shot at 1600 x 840 25p on a 32gig 60mB/s CF card, scaled to 1280 x 720 (720p)

That's amazing . . . especially on a 600d body

i didn't think the hardware would support the data rates on the lower end cameras

yeah I think you are correct, and most with the 600d are currently scraping to get 720p even with fast cards, but I've read that it's slowly getting better. I'd guess it also has bad aliasing too. Those filters that go between the body and lens seem to do pretty well

So have they sorted out the crap audio problems for DSLR's yet? or do you still feed into an unbalanced audio input with mic power on it?

No point having great pictures without great audio....
Are people still putting a mic on top of the camera for interviews?
What are you putting the final image to, DVD?... if so check out the resolution of DVD then.

the 60d is in the works. some have also got the 650d working now to some extent. looks like it has a faster buffer.

i used adobe after effects for that clip above. it opens adobe camera raw upon importing the .dng files (after converting the raw video into .dng files)

i've seen a a plugin for gimp if u need to stick with freeware, then you could use blender (free video editing). not sure how much recovery ability gimp has compared to the adobe software??

SO the 7D should be able to handle it no probs eh haircut ?
is there any risk of bricking the camera with the firmware mod - i assume its not cannon approved?
but im still more than interested in modding it

Gizmo what were you comparing the audio with of course it will be the same as before . . . .
a firmware mod will not improve the hardware just the software (obviously)
if your shooting your video in raw then you will be processing the end result (thats the whole point of raw) and i've not experienced many if at all high end video cameras that their audio quality matches the quality of the video - that said if your shooting in raw then its not much more of a step to record a separate audio source (or three depending on the application ) and attach it at the processing stage so that the overall quality is real high end
