It looks like Virgin Blue have changed their excellent sporting goods luggage allowance. In the past every item counted for 5kgs out of your 20kgs allowance. This meant I usually had 3 items (2 boards and sail/mast bag) and a few clothes. Now it seems you get an extra 5kgs, but that's it:

"If you are travelling with Sports Equipment, you will be eligible to check-in an extra 5kg of baggage allowance free of charge. This additional allowance is allocated above your purchased checked baggage allowance for Blue Saver or GO! Fares or above the inclusive checked baggage allowance for Velocity Gold and Silver Members or for Guests travelling on Flexible, Corporate Plus or Premium Economy fares."

Looks like I will have to take less clothes to WA next year

28kgs? My sail bag weighs that. Oh well, I guess the excess charges aren't too bad.

Just a thought but if we were weighed with our baggage and charged accordingly like cargo the world of travelors would be a fitter more weight conscious place.
Oh and I'm new here, so Hello and Gidday.

Tiger have a pretty low limit for theirs. I'm not sure what their excess baggage deal is.
BTW to keep us rampies happy, keep your bag nice and light. It sucks being on your knees manoeuvring a 30kg bag with a bent back into a tiny spot. You sweat from places you didn't even know you could.
Tiger aircraft are nice and easy to stack because of their low bag limit. bags are generally a reasonable size and weigh bugger all so they can be stacked nicely.

Since about 3 or so days ago on the website, actually comes into effect on Sept 1st. When I was checking out flights to WA about a week ago it was the old policy (sporting goods account towards 5kg of you're checked baggage regardless of weight). Booked flights today and it's totally changed this is now the policy;

Guidelines for Guests who purchase their fare on or after 18 August 2008, for travel on or after 1 September 2008

If you are travelling with Sports Equipment, you will be eligible to check-in an extra 5kg of baggage allowance free of charge. This additional allowance is allocated above your purchased checked baggage allowance for Blue Saver or GO! Fares or above the inclusive checked baggage allowance for Velocity Gold and Silver Members or for Guests travelling on Flexible, Corporate Plus or Premium Economy fares.

Excess baggage charges will apply once the full allowance, including the additional 5kg allowance, has been exceeded.

If you are taking only sporting goods and you are travelling on a Blue Saver or GO! fare, you will still be required to purchase the checked baggage allowance of up to 23 kg. Remember you can pre-purchase this allowance for $8 per flight before you arrive at the airport otherwise you will be charged a $20 fee at the airport.

For example, if you have purchased a baggage allowance of 23kg, and are travelling with a bike, you will be eligible for a total checked baggage allowance of 28kg. If your bike weighs 10kg, you will be able to take additional checked baggage (such as a suitcase) weighing up to 18kg.

If you booked your flights before Aug 18th the old policy still applies.

So basically if you want to get it all on under the new policy your entire kits needs to be <28kg and then pack your carry on bag (clothes) to the density of lead and take that on board.

With all these sorts of things though it really does depend who you get at the check in desk on the day. In the past i've found Virgin pretty hassle free.

with tiger you pay the extra $30 on the internet and your aloud 32kg sporting gear and then another bag up to 15kg which isn't over sized, that how it was at the start of the year any way

Sorry to bring this up again, but I just thought I'd point out the costs for extra gear with VB can be quite expensive.

If I carried a sail bag that weighed 28kgs and boards/boom/fins that weigh up to 20kgs, I would be up for an extra $168 in excess baggage charges. That's without taking any clothes into the equation as well. I had incorrectly assumed that the excess charges weren't too bad, but they are $8 per kg over the initial allowance.

Qantas, at least for the moment, are still charging per piece for excess luggage domestically, and at $20 per piece, is cheaper than VB.

I think in future I might be flying Qantas a bit more often...

One problem with Qantas is that items of >2m length may not go on the flight you are on. This is because on some planes, Qantas pack luggage into big aluminium thingys... Qantas have told me this ~3 times, but always managed to get my gear on Virgin was hassle free... not sure about now though
