What ever you get, make sure its the model that has the inverter type and soft sound blade action.
Keeps the switching in and out too a slow ramp up and down on fan operation, no big clunk on and off. The soft sound blades also keeps nose level down to a dull roar.
Neighbors will appreciate the no or low noise operation
mine is a Hitachi Utopia R407C. Can run individual rooms or whole house.

Id agree, inverters are good, but if your using snall split systems for bedrooms or smaller rooms you may not receive much benefit for the extra expense, however Inverters are now almost price competetive as MEPS, (mimimum efficiency performance standards)have forced all the low performing units off the market.
But if you are wanting to do the whole house you may wish to consider a ducted system, as its usually more efficient to do the whole house with a "zoned" system, this gives you the ability to switch rooms on and off as you need them.
Get a good brand unit as some "no name" brands are very difficult to get parts for.

We put in a ceiling mounted cassette style last summer, does the whole of our open plan living area. It's an airwell inverter style, the largest you can get on single phase. nice and quiet

Have been using it in winter, 5 mins in the morning and the house is toasty for the boss who really feels the cold.

Oh and my old house I had a couple of LG 'Artcool' aircons. Very quiet and they are aesthetically pleasing! I basically got a price of the internet and went up to Rick Hart and got them to match it. So ended up with over $300 off. Let me know and I can forward you website
