Cessation of Recreational Access to Lancelin Defence Training Area

This broadcast is sent on behalf of Defence Support.
Recreational access to and transit of the Lancelin Defence Training Area is no longer
permitted at any time.

Defence has hitherto permitted transit through the Lancelin Defence Training Area to access Wedge and Cervantes on the basis that it was the fastest, most direct route. Providing this transit access represents a significant liability to Defence given the risk associated with the presence of unexploded ordnance throughout the Training Area. This liability is compounded by the routine abuse of the transit privilege by some recreational trail bike riders, 4WD enthusiasts and campers who stray from the designated transit routes.

Indian Ocean Drive now provides a sealed, high speed alternative to transit through the Training Area and negates any requirement for recreational access. In the coming months the Training Area boundary will be reinforced to prevent unauthorised access. Additional signage directing people to Indian Ocean Drive for North South transit will also be erected.

The closure described in this notice will not have any impact on the access privileges enjoyed by legitimate users such as Bee Keepers and the Yued people. Applications for or enquiries regarding access to the Training Area by others who consider they have a legitimate requirement should be directed to [email protected] .

I think it is pretty fair cosidering the amount of unexploded ordnance up there. BUT this refers to UXO in the tracks through behind the beach and there is none on the beach due to where the bombing area lies, plus tidal movement and winter beach erosion.

So maybe WWA and WAKSA should put in a submission for access but only if driving up the beach from Lano and not driving behind the dunes?
If they could get the surfers and recreational fishers on board too they are far more powerful lobby groups than WWA and WAKSA (combined!!) and with all 4 we'd have a fair chance.

This is devastating. Can't ever remember anyone getting exploded by an old bomb.

Stick to the track and you'll be right.

Whilst many think that Wedge is the destination, a big chunk of it was about the journey up the beach & through the scrub.

Does this mean the tracks are still open, and they're just fixing the fences?

And does it mean you can't go up the beach either? Or just the tracks behind the dunes?

A couple of mates and I went up on Monday to surf Bombing Range. Since my last visit they have put a stack of signs on the beach saying "No Camping - unexploded ordinence danger - Lanclin Defence" or something similar.

I think someone in an office somewhere is getting bored and attempting to kill all the fun.

If people want to go play with bombs - let them!

By placing all these rules and regulations everywhere we are working against natural selection. If people go trecking through a bombing range they probably should not be breeding. Darwin would be turning in his grave.

On this point, I went for a swim in North Cott last week (I'm usally a Leighton boy). Walking down the stairs I noticed in the warnings billbord the usual, rips, rocks, then I spoted the warning for "water". Please, water at a beach?

I say invade New Zealand! Give the defence dep something more interesting to do than put up signs and worry over stupid people.
