I have always believed "The Truth Will Set You Free!!" but in the case of Mr Assange it looks like having the oposite effect.

Freedom of the press and freedom of the internet are one and the same thing but apparently not in the eyes fo Senator Conroy.

The Australian founder of the whistleblower website Wikileaks had his passport confiscated by police when he arrived in Melbourne last week.

Even if you think the law is wrong, he broke the law - end of story.

The Law has to be wrong and illegal and contrary to all natural law if exposing the truth is illegal.

Exposing the truth is never a CRIME!!!!

For evil to occur, all that is required is good men not to act.

I thought the point was that he didn't break any law. His passport was taken because it supposedly looked worn. It was then returned to him. Then he was questioned by an AFP officer about previous offences. THEN Conroy told him that his leaking of blacklisted website was being referred to the AFP. From what I can make out, he's not been arrested and I assume he's still got his passport.

Did I misunderstand the story? Could be, it's a bit confusing as written.

But I agree with Cisco. With very few and specific exceptions, ALL government information should be freely available to the citizens of this country. It's our country and OUR information. It does NOT "belong to the government". The government is answerable to us, not the other way around.

That is a bloody strange comment Bruce! Would you mind elaborating?

What I read into the story is that Assange is being harrassed because he is upsetting the establishment. If he falls under a bus it will not be the first time they have taken that option. Perhaps that is why he chooses to live in Iceland.

Bet he had a good long look at his passport when they returned it too!

Assuming you didn't bother to rtfa, the guy got his passport back and was questioned about previous convictions. Copy and paste ftfa (bold is mine):

"Mr Assange, 37, told The Age newspaper that half an hour after his passport was returned to him an AFP officer searched one of his bags and questioned him about a previous criminal record for computer hacking offences when he was a teenager. "

Essential reading for anyone vaguely interested in internet filtering:

www.efa.org.au/category/censorship/mandatory-isp-filtering/

Of note, thank the coalition government and independents (not the greens) for changing the freedom of information act in September of 2003 specifically to make it illegal to:

www.efa.org.au/Issues/Censor/cens1.html#secret
www.efa.org.au/FOI/clabill2002/index.html

Love it or hate it, the fact of the matter is that's law.

Disagreeing with the law is no excuse for breaking it, and certainly no grounds to complain when you get get busted.

www.theguardian.com/media/2010/jun/11/wikileaks-founder-assange-pentagon-manning

American officials are searching for Julian Assange (our information Robbin Hood), the founder of WikiLeaks in an attempt to pressure him not to publish thousands of confidential and potentially hugely embarrassing diplomatic cables that offer unfiltered assessments of Middle East governments and leaders.

The Daily Beast, a US news reporting and opinion website, reported that Pentagon investigators are trying to track down Julian Assange - an Australian citizen who moves frequently between countries - after the arrest of a US soldier last week who is alleged to have given the whistleblower website a classified video of American troops killing civilians in Baghdad.

"Searching" eh? So much for the for the the new world order knowing everything! lol

Smells like they are trying to scare him off, because if they wanted him found (or worse), I am sure it would have happened already.
