A report from the Norwegian Nansen Centre said that August ice melted more slowly this year than in 2008 or 2007, due to an atmospheric condition transporting ice towards the coast of Siberia, while also discouraging its southward drift.

Newly-released data has indicated that the Arctic Ocean will be open sea in as little as a decade, leaving it clear for sea transportation.
