Hi Windsurf/Kitesurf Experts,

we are travelling up north from Sydney to Cairns in July and we were wondering whether the wind conditions are good for kitesurfing at that time of the year?

A kitesurfer in Sydney told me that the wind season is over, so that mainly west and east winds are coming in in the winter. Is that also right for the northern part of NSW and Queensland?

It would be great if you can help me out! Thank you very much!

Cheers,

Daniel

If you want wind on the east coast you have two options.

Firstly park somewhere nice and wait for frontal westerlies to come through. This may happen quickly or may not happen for weeks or months. They are difficult to predict. If a large high pressure system parks itself across southern Australia then the fronts will be pushed back and won't make it to NSW or Queensland.

The second option is to head north, to far north Queensland. The same high pressure systems will be pumping strong winds 24 hours a day up there.

Don't bring any sailing gear. When you get here hire the most expensive kayaks you can find.

Chances are you will wish you brought your sailing gear and we may get some wind!
