Hey Guys! I am writing in regard to my up and coming school work experience. I am to spend 5 days in a field of work that I may like to pursue in my after school future. My name is Andy McPherson, I am seeking work experience in the field of Journalism and in particular in regards to magazines, also in the field of marine biology or marine science, since a very young age I have had an undying passion for all things aquatic. My interests include aquariums, diving, underwater photography, free diving, spearfishing and kite surfing. As you can see all of my hobbies connect with the ocean. I have always wanted a career in marine or journalism so I am grabbing this opportunity to have a sneak peak into my passion. So if you could help me or assist me with leads it would be much appreciated. I am based in Bundaberg but have contacts in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Townsville and the sunshine coast.

if anyone has any input that would assist it would be greatly appreciated

Just remember future employers will always be able to find you on Google now that you have posted your name on Seabreeze, it will be in the top 5 hits on Google. That's not a problem, just don't say dumb **** and make yourself out to be a tool.

Well done on being proactive in gaining field work. It took me a while after uni to find what I considered an entry position into my commerce career. As for marine science, I know a few contacts that I can ask around for you.
I'll PM you if I hear anything.

"Work experience" kids cost the employer quite a lot, so finding one willing to take you on is a coup all of its own. Often employers willing to take w/e kids are on the lookout for new and interesting talent. So, whatever you do, do it well and to the best of your ability and keep the attitude good. The right person is at least as good as the right qualifications.

Good on ya for being proactive.

I sort of have to disagree with the above. It does not cost them anything, The W/E kids are usually covered under schools insurance and they dont get paid. Yes they need to be trained in what ever they are doing but usually they get assigned to one person and usually assists them in their daily duties. I have dealt with a lot of W/E kids in Warehousing and Agriculture and I have found they work harder and learn faster than the companies own employees.

Show them that you are willing to work hard and even assist without pay on weekends and you will find yourself with a job in no time.

Good luck and happy times. Marine Biology is an amazing subject where you can branch into anything.

good on you mate. It's always good to do something you enjoy for a living. Don't want to be a downer or anything, just be aware Journo's on average don't make a lot of coin but you might be the next big thing. Also marine scientists are normally very very qualified (ie PHD) before they get a proper job due to competition in the field. Lots of people would like to buz around and dive for a living (including lots of euros here in our universities) so there is a lot of competition for limited positions in organisations that are always struggling for funding. In fact I think marine biology has one of the highest unemployed rates by graduates. You aren't at the age yet where you should really be considering these things, I just wish people had given me sensible career advice over the years. There is also the adage that do something you enjoy for a living and you soon wont enjoy it anymore, and there is a reason why people slug it out as accountants or proctologists or whatever even though they don't enjoy it so much, and thats usually because the pay is better.

If you have someone you can stay with in Townsville you should try the AIMS (australian institute of marine science) you may even get a boat trip and you might be able to have a kite with andy yates. several of the local kiters are (euro)marine biology students. soon to be employed at KFC probably.
