It might be on ere....

If you have no real problem with drivers then thats your first problem, there are idiots everywhere, which brings me to drivers who open doors on you, pass way to close, turn left in front of you, Kn honk ya bloody horn at you.... etc etc. Had a guy years ago sitting in the bike lane blocking the whole thing with his toorak tractor, so i pulled up and tapped on the window and said "mate your sitting in the bike lane" (it was peak hour and backed up for miles) then he started screaming at me about paying taxes and how i was a bum, did he assume that beacuse i chose to ride my bike to work from which i pay taxes to build the road, that i shouldn't be allowed the 0.000001% of it which is dedicated to riders.

However, even though it is perfectly legal to ride too abrest on any road, it is not practical and as rude as parking ya monster truck in the bike lane, so they probabily shouldn't be doing that. But in the case of a real skinny road, if there would only be a small margin to pass i take the middle so there is no opportunity to pass and no risk, then as soon as possible will get outta the way give yield the entire road. Just gotta be considerate and think from the riders point of view as they (we) aren't encased in metal.

Thats some of it

Agree 100% with manicskier. Anyone who gets angry at cyclists for adding 5 or 10 seconds to their journey should imagine that cyclist as their child and think how they would like other drivers to behave around them.

If my child was behaving so foolishly as to riding their bike on a busy road with hundreds of trucks and cars passing within inches of them every minute, I'd give them a good thrashing and throw their bike on the rubbish tip.

The fact is a fair number of drivers are in la la land behind the wheel. I do not understand how anyone can literally put their life in the hands of drivers on a busy road, unless they have a death wish. However you see it all the time. You also hear about cyclists getting hit all the time too.

Clearly there is a problem. In Sydney at least there are very few cycle lanes and whenever the RTA proposes one, the NRMA and others start whinging about traffic jams and so forth.

The car is king, long live the king. For road cycling to be safe there needs to be cycle paths and lanes, especially in places where people want to cycle. Unfortunately in Sydney there is a lack of space on the roads and bicycles get squeezed out.

I think its more a case of both cyclists and drivers being more aware of each other.

If a cyclist sees 2 ton of steel coming up behind them, the common sense thing to do would be just to get out of the way. It is far easier for a cyclist to maneuver his bike than it is a car. And generally much safer. If the road has very little verge for them to move, I dont mind being held up a little as its clear they cant get out of the way.

The main issue I have is with the big groups of semi pro cyclists wannabes who think they own the road and have blatant disregard for lights and pedestrians.

"Had a guy years ago sitting in the bike lane blocking the whole thing with his toorak tractor"

My heart goes out to you...you poor thing

u once had a car block you years ago.

I reckon i have 50+ cyclists block my path along beach rd everyday.

The worst thing is i overtake the bikes then when i stop at the lights ( which a lot of riders choose not to do ) you lane split and overtake all the cars that just overtook you meaning you once again block traffic causing us to overtake you.

I to ride my bike to work ( 2 times a week )

the only difference is i ride on the "bike path" yes the Bike path that is designed for bike riders to keep them safe and separated from cars which can travel a lot faster!

I have a little trick i overtake them leaving millimeters, one of three things could happen

a) they keep riding giving me the bird

b) they realise how dangerous it is a start riding on the bike path

or

c) i hit them and they can never ride again

RELAX A BIT I AM ONLY JOKING JEEZ

your sick. 2/3rds of my ride there are no "path options" but there is a 1 metre sectioned off on the road for bikers. drivers tent to neglect the tiny little yellow dots marking bike paths on the road but i assure you there is almost a metre. Its people like you that should have there lisence taken away. its not a game of who gets more road half the time (maybe they are avoiding glass), so if you dare think its funny to give them a MM of space... seek help.

I ride my bike to work often.

I try to stick to bike paths and back streets as much as possible, keep to my side of the road and pay attention to other road users.

However it never ceases to amaze me the arrogance of car drivers in Perth.
Cutting you up, paying no heed whatsoever to you, overtaking you on the downhill outside the Sheraton only to have me overtake them again at the bottom, driving incredibly close to you the list of whines goes on

Cycles have as much rights on the road as anyone else and i think drivers need to keep an extra eye out for us. Tough thing for Perth drivers i think.

Dirty great bear-trap pedals are the answer. It's called education through panel-damage. A sturdy boot in the panel can be satisfying too. Can they prove that you kicked their car as opposed to them hitting you?

I had a flatmate (mountain biking enthusiast) who was cut off by a left turning BMW. My flatmate did his best to avoid the car, and was forced to swerve left as well. He lost contact with the road at some stage (nobody has been able to prove that it wasn't an accident...) and buried his spiky mountainbike pedal clean through the doorskin of the car. He rolled over the soft top landing on his feet on the other side of the car.

It turned out that the driver had bought the car brand new (latest model) two days earlier, and was VERY keen to press charges, and get his door replaced.

The police assessment was that the BMW driver was at fault, and he was very lucky not to have caused serious injury. The driver ended up paying for the repairs to the bike, and all legal costs. And the $6500 for a replacment doorskin for his own car..

With that sort of stuff going on, I can't blame the cyclists who take a slightly defensive position on the road.

There are definitely others who are suffering from lycra riding shorts three sizes too small though. They usually drive the same way they ride - like prats..

I hate it when weekend cyclists ride in packs(tour de france style), taking up the whole road, holding up many cars behind them for ages. Inconsiderate pricks. And they wonder why people abuse them ???

yes i really do this??????????

Why the hell would i Endanger someones life.

accident: an unforeseen and unplanned event or circumstance b: lack of intention

i believe the problem is not the cars or bikes but Government bodies who do not put bike lanes in on high ( biker ) traffic areas.

SUV (screw u vehicle) owners think every cm of tar is their personal playground and definately squeeze cyclist over for there own selfish wide-load priority.

Just this morning I saw a fk off big 4WD cross to the wrong side of the road (due to a car parked on the road on his side) forcing an oncoming sedan - with the right of way - to hit the anchors!! I am sure the w@nker 4 wheeler was thinking "Bloody sedan should have stopped earlier?". Icing on the cake.. the Screw U Vehicle driver was on the phone driving one handed!?!? WTF is wrong with these wannabe urban cowbaoys n soccer mums?!?

I had a few choice word recently with a SS U-bewt-ute pilot. As I aproach roundabouts on my deadly treadly, I alway make an exagerated gesture of movin over, then move to the centre of the lane to go through the roundy (as is my right of way) so as not to get squeezed as the lane tapers left to right going in, and also to avoid getting run off the roundy or bumped by impatient buttwipes who try to slide past on the curve and can't handle being slowed by a matter of seconds on their journey. This selfish dork just couldn't deal with this, gunned it and tried to get around me, nearly mounting the island (and skittling me). He then lets his horn (substituting for something?) go big time, like it was my fault. I slow in the roundy, turn back and eyeball him. He then screams out of the roundy right up my sphincter, slows alongside, winds down his window and lets fly - while I tell him where to find a brain and familiarising him with some colouful language and the reverse victory sign.

So... if the bloke is in such a hurry as to endanger me, his vehicle, other road users etc that he has to pull selfish, illegal moves, why then does he have time to then slow down and wind the window down?? What a nong.

Tin tops need to understand cyclists have every right that a car does. Personally I am not in favour of two abreast (or more) riding as I think (although legal) it does impede drivers and lead to the driver pulling rash, dodgy moves to the detriment of all. Still that is their right of way and car drivers need to understand the facts and drive like they are SHARING the road, not owning it.

Crikey!!!

I agree with everything PR says here!?

It is true, the list of pathetic, selfish moves Perf drivers pull - endangering a cyclist's life to save them a mere few seconds is right out there.

I stick to bike paths and quiet roads for 90% of my journey to and from work (24kms round trip). Almost without fail, every trip, some idiot puls a dangerous, selfish and ultimately unnnecessary move on me in the more risky 10% section. If there wasn't bike paths most of the way i probably wouldn't risk it to be honest, such is the level of ignorance and ridiculous driving out there..

Better get used to it. I can see a day in the not-too-distant future when everyone will ride their bikes on the freeways. Then we can all have fun squeezing the minority of rich bastards who can afford to fuel their hybrids off into the bushes.

Why are you overtaking bikes when there is a red light up ahead? You are going to have to stop anyway, why not just roll up slowly to the lights?

I never understood this behaviour.

cause i cant see into the future?

How the McFark do u know when a green light will turn red, let me in on this secret.

I am talking about a main road, in peak our. it can take a few light cycles before you even get through the intersection

Question: are Cyclists allowed to lane split or undertake cars?

Hope it's not too late to retract your ebay bid on the crystal ball

Crap! why is everything I enjoy always so contraversial
I ride a mountain bike to work each day, I enjoy riding a road bike on the weekends for exercise with a few mates and I enjoy 4wding.

Why is it that for everything I like doing, theres a fanatical group actively lobbying against it?? I guess soon there'll be an anti landyachting lobby too

Main problem is we live in mainly 'ME' society.

Some cyclist/drivers haven't learnt to 'share' when they were toddlers - hence their childish behavior, from both sides.

Yeah.. there should be a law against landyachts - they're dangerous, they speed, and there's no safety certification process...

Besides, they leave tire marks all over the pristine lake / beach surfaces, and research shows that they are having a major impact on the habitat and populations of the lesser-spotted burrowing salt weevil.

well this is a very topical issue but generally if bike riders continue to take up a portion of roadway and delay traffic flow then they to should be subject to pay rego and insurance to use the road as all motorist have to incure this charge and privilage! or they should just stay on the riding tracks provided and let the pedestrians and joggers complain

Do you know that most of us cyclists actually own motor vehicles as well!! In fact I own 3 so should be able to use the roads as I feel fit coz I have more rights to them than you do according to your logic!
