well as you are aware with the minerals boom and a local economy going gangbusters perhaps its a sign of the times? car breaks down, desert it? or maybe there is a more sinister component, vehicle theft etc, basically I dont know but its friday afternoon and well, what do you do but have a look at seabreeze.

Good question though. Id like to know the answer as well. Just slightly of topic, why are there always lots of empty bottles, usually of an alcoholic nature dumped at the freeway exit points, ie south street exit coming from North?

I'm always amused by cars on the side of the Hume Highway (break downs, petrol etc). When I drive to Canberra to see the folks for the weekend I always take note of the cars on the side of the road. When I drive back on Sunday I'm usually astonished by the state of most of the cars that were left. Wheels gone, windows smashed, doors/panels removed etc. The best I have ever seen was a commodore (must have been stolen as surely you'd come back for it ASAP). Anyway on Friday it was fine. On the way back on Sunday all that was left was the shell. Engine, driveline (diff etc), wheels, panels + doors, interior all gone. I couldn't help but think to myself how industrious some people are haha. I'm mean it can't be that easy to remove an entire engine from a car on the side of the road. I also though to myself...why not just take the whole car if you're going to that much effort.

All I know is I ever broke down on the Hume between Syd/Melb I would endeavor to get my car towed ASAP, because the longer you leave it the greater the chance there will be nothing left when you get back haha.

Yes! I have noticed heaps of 'Reported' cars lately too! WTF is goin on?

It seemed for a while that only accessories (stereos, iPods, cash) etc were being nicked and the cars left alone. Suddenly it is only fun if the owners is inconvenienced that bit extra by not having their car ever again.

There was a nice case of this with an abondoned Magna gracing the carpark of Beatty Park for a week+ with a nice tasteful array of 8-10 syringes on the dasboard and all windows down to allow kiddies access to the picks... very nice indeed.

yeah had one of these "reported" vehicles in my street a couple of months back. it started out a reasonable unit.

after a day or 2 the back window got smashed in.

a few more days later more smashed windows.

then i see that the bonnet is open and it looks as though the battery and a few other items have found a new home.

by the end of the week all windows are smashed and most panels are kicked in

Yeh ran out of picks and had to cruise the local shops looking for some primary school kids to get some refills..

Still at least I always have a car bay there.

Er, Dawny it varies. I only learnt to swim properly a couple of years ago (truly) but have been goin twice a week in winter to try to fit at the start of the kiting season for a change.

Wish the place wasn't so populated by rejects from the Village People tribute show taking that little bit too long to vacate the changerooms... eeeyyyuuww...

I would normally say "Meet you there sometime." but it all seems a bit wrong, broken and sordid now! That car was there for 2-3 weeks I think? Bloody ordinary of the authorities to leave the needles in place I reckon.

its interesting that get funky, recognises the problem of the used syringes but is dissapointed that the "authorities" havent cleaned it up, is this atitude indicative of nanny state mentality? ie someone else's problem? Dont get me wrong, I dont think I would have dived in and cleaned it up like some social superman, but who are these "authorities" the council, the police, the govenrment? Who is responsible for cleaning up dead cars in carparks?
And I agree it should have been cleanded up more quickly.

Geez mate am I to correct all of the world's ills?????

If an authority gumby can come out and put a kn great big orange sticker on the car then they can bloody well notify that there is a social/health risk in the area too I reckon.

For your info I am the kind of sap (as others would see me) who finds bottles and other hazards on the beach/kids playgrounds etc and picks em up takes them home (if no 'authorities' have provided a bin) and disposes of em.

Picks? No kn way am I touching them though! BTW I did think about going back into the pool and mentioning the problem to the staff, but assumed they were that visible the staff already knew about the problem.

er... back to the cars on the side of the road - there really does seem to be a marked increase in dumped cars in the last 6 months or so.

Election time means it could be a good time to jump on talkback radio and stick it to the all talk and no walk pollies about this (and other) issue.

Well its not uncommon in Western Ausralia to BORROW LEND AND USE OTHERS PEOPLES CARS how ever you can get your hands on one legal or illegal. With petrol prices in the bush well over $1.70 plus per litre

You get caught out in the middle of on where,,, no bus no life no transport ....and you just jump into what evers got keys in it or keys you sore off someone who was as drunk as a skunk at a party and transport your self to Perth.

Once you get there you Dump it, generally once you run out of petrol and or get picked up in the next free ride.

OH......... if you score 30 plus litre well thats a bonus........

The Authorities wack a sticker on it Reported ....alerting you not to phone it in, but instead tell your mates where it is so you can return later and collect some spare parts, cash that in and get enough petrol money to get home again.

Its works really well .
Especially with so many people working away, leaving there cars for a couple of weeks at both remote and city places........

It takes a long time to walk from Meekathara to collect your car in Perth.
