Im a computer user, I treat it like a telly, turn it on and use it. Other then that I try to ignore it. Recently my PC has been playing up, slow, etc weve got XP and the PC is only a year old, I ran spybot and it said I had one spyinfection, so I deleted it, (using spybot) I watched ABC1 the other night about "botnets" and now Im sure the russians have got control of my computer? (well why not! what else could it be!!)

Ive changed the data cable, rebooted the modem, and the PC, called the ISP. (westnet) all to no avail, its driving me mad!!

Also we can never get an internet connection in the mornings? for the last couple of months!!!

Some afternoons fine like normal. other times real slow, ie wont load a page like seabreeze.

Any one have any simple ideas that I can pursue from home before unplugging the thing and taking it to a techo?

Backup your data.
Format and reinstall the operating system.

This should be a last resort surely?

Is it your computer or just internet that is slow? Do you have a wireless router? If it's got no security perhaps one of your neighbours is stealing all your bandwidth.

With the slow Internet the easiest way to find out if its a connection problem or a computer problem is plug a known good computer into the network and see how it goes. If the other computer can't get on the Internet or whatever other has other Internet problems then there is a problem with the network. If there are no problems with the good computer then its a problem with the computer.

You can spend hours buggerising with your computer trying to get the computer right. However wiping the OS and starting again usually gives the best results. The only provisios are you have plenty of time, the installation disks for all your applications and drivers plus somewhere to make sure your data is backed up safely.

For the slow computer question, try running Disk Defragmenter, located in Start Menu> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> Disk Defragmenter.
Depending on how messy your computer is, it can take from about an hour to overnight.
This could usually happen from incorrect shut downs to downloading some nasty (not naughty ;D) stuff that messes with your computer. Such as infected files from the virus that you had.

and if its just a slow internet at random times, maybe you have reached your download limit.

Hope any of it helped!

Hi,
Thanks, Ive done the defrag,
Dont know about that wire shark thing, do I just down load it?
Its not Telstra, Westnet
The format idea seems like final solution
I do have a wireless modem, (and new neighbours) but the wireless has recently been disabled, and our downloads wernt excessive.
No connection at all today untill evening, just sat there grinding away????? Seems OK now?

Thanks for the ideas
