It seems like a few dinosaurs in the upper house could still scupper the daylight savings bill. Can anyone tell me how to contact these guys (some names are in the West). They say they haven't heard from anyone in favour yet conveniently don't provide any contact details. We need to get on to them fast. Here are a few thoughts on the pros and dismissals of a few points against. I haven't mentioned my selfish desire to go windsurfing after work as my main concern !

In favour:

1. Reduced greenhouse emissions. It is rediculous to have a situation where most of the population is laying in bed while it is light outside and then having to use electric light in the evening for indoor and outdoor activities.

2. Long working hours. People undoubtedly work longer these days than in the past. An extra hours daylight saving restores the opportunity to engage in leisure and household maintenance activities (lawn cutting, car washing etc).

3. Family life: Family life will be enhanced by the opportunity for working parents to spend quality time with kids on healthy outdoor activities. Modern lifestyles frequently mean both parents are working.

4. Business efficiency: it is very difficult to do business with the East with a 3 hour time difference.

Against:

1. Increased skin cancer risk: it only takes 10-20 mins to get sun burn anyway. We all know if you are out in the sun you should stay protected. This change will mostly affect late evening sunshine which is the least risky though I aknowledge that children will be out of school in stronger sun. However, they all play sport and take recess during the strong sunshine parts of the day so what's the difference?

2. Increased use of air conditioning: I don’t believe this one. The most efficient way to use evaporative air con is to leave on 24 hrs per day, hence no difference. I think many people who run air con in the evening switch it off at bed time due to noise and reduced temperature. Therefore no difference - same number of hours. The only people it could affect would be those running it on a timer who could conceivably run it an extra hour.

3. Too hot for kids to go to bed. This may be of some concern for those without air con in the north of the state. The solution is simple - go to bed an hour later. If it really is an issue, the relatively few people in the north affected could always choose to start school and hour later and go to bed an hour later. This is much easier than the majority of the population in Perth trying to get up an hour earlier to create their own daylight saving.

4. All other objections to do with cows, chickens and curtains are total nonsense. Look at the rest of the world,

Keeping people at work for more daylight hours is a ridiculous way to try to reduce skin cancer.

It's my body, let me choose if I wanna burn it (I don't, by the way).

Additionally, I would say that daylight savings would reduce skin cancer due to outdoor workers spending less time in the hottest part of the day.

We should at least give it a trial. If we don't, we'll never really know what we're missing!
(except by sitting at work watching the green arrows pass us by )

We are talking about 1 hour. The way these dinosaurs are carrying on you would think we were putting the clock forward by 10.

And don't settle for the end of October like we have here. I remember in 2000, they started it at the beginning of September for the Sydney 2000 Olympics, and everyone loved it. It was unreal. Why they didn't keep it then I don't know.

WA parliament votes for daylight saving

Australians will have daylight saving in two weeks' time after a bill to introduce the controversial regime passed through the state's upper house.

Daylight saving seemed a dead issue in WA until last month, with state politicians avoiding it after West Australians rejected the regime in three referendums over the past 31 years.

But it will come into effect on December 3 following a whirlwind passage of a new bill through parliament.

The bill was drafted after independent MP John D'Orazio proposed a new piece of legislation to bring in daylight saving.

Liberal MP Matt Birney then proposed a similar one and Labor worked with both men to develop the final bill.

The state's lower house passed this final bill last month after both major parties agreed to allow a free vote on the matter.

But its passage was briefly delayed in the upper house when opposition MPs called for the legislation to go before a parliamentary committee ahead of any vote.

However the legislative council finished debating the issue last week with most members saying they were in favour of daylight saving.

The upper house passed the bill by 21 votes to 10.

Once WA gets daylight saving only Queensland and the Northern Territory will be without it.
