Facebook isn't merely social networking; it is social networking on a private, public, group and business basis. It is what you have all mentioned, plus the business aspect of it as follows.
The purpose of Facebook for businesses is that it is a Web 2.0 tool. Web 2.0 are resources which contain blogs, wikis, videos, music and RSS feeds.
It is aimed at the so called 'Y-Generation', through attracting business goers with the use of social huddles (where business can create workgroups on a private and personal level). Facebook applications can be structured to appeal to specific demographics (tweens, teens, adults, other businesses) in a way which is appealing, interesting and relevant advertising through the application.
The users install the application, which directs them to your website, and shows their 'friends' or 'social groups' which applications they would like to send to their friends; and the application (your company) is passed around.
Personally, Facebook is more for a business orientated company which ALREADY has its name set in the marketplace; whereas a lot of new and 'up-and-coming' business or ones who are trying to break into the business or marketing world, begin on MySpace.

Huh? I am interested in that concept (work) but can you explain the above to me? I thought Facebook (et al) was where you can bung up some pics of yourself and your old school friends can find you and send email. How does it facilitate inter and intra group communication any more than before it existed?
Confused....PS I am technologically illiterate so please no big propellorhead words. DL where are you
