Yes it can always catch you, no matter how hard you try not to let it.
But there's a few things, watch the water for gusts, so you're prepared to either sheet out or lean further back.
Adopt a more leaning back attitude while sailing.
If you have to move forward unhook first. (sudden lull in gusty conditions)
Don't take feet out of straps when maxed out. (one of my best catapults)
Catching a leeward rail is another cause, happens to me if I'm not concentrating on where I'm going.
Bearing off seems to compound any of the above. so be extra carefull.

It all depends on what is happening when you get catapulted.
If it's when there is an abundance of win and you are tending to get overpowered, try lowering your boom, this enables you to hang out further from the boom and allows you to have your legs to bend more.
If you are standing to upright with straight legs then you have less time to react from a gust.
I give a bit more of a description of what is happening there is bound to be some help as we all go through it.

try longer harness lines (24-28cm).
measure one third of the boom length from the front - put the back strap there. put the front one a fist's width in front of that.
make sure you've got enough downhaul. Rig to the numbers on your sail and add a bit more downhaul for a stiff mast. If you're not sure, ask someone at your local if they think you have enough.

Bear away and sheet in hard.... very very hard.
Do this as soon as you feel the catapault start... tuck your legs up and try and grip the board with your feet/toes
You'll never look at the catapault the same way again

hey kremlin, i try forwards that way all the time, but can't get the board to grip the water. it always slides out when I land so i fall in the water.
how do you get it to stick?

Comrade Boris
What means you when saying 'can't get board to grip' ?
Please more explanaition of what you and board are doing as it slides out ?
Is board slidding out and rounding up after you land... or is it popping up, out and sides ways with a bit of a bounce ?
I think maybe you are going too much horizontal on rotation... just a little bit end over may be required.
Also is board landing flat or are you landing on your back with board then popping out ?

I meant that as the rotation finishes and the board hits the water, it seems to slide sideways. Kind of feels like there is no fin in the board.
Hard to say if the board is landing flat. probably not.
So end over is the trick? That sort of angle freaks me out a little though. Any tips??
thanks

i have the same problem when i only do two rotations. I find the trick is to commit to the third rotation and you no longer spinout

Comrade Maurice`
Plenty training up this way
Sunday was un-believable out at Middle Rock (half way between one mile and samurai)
Cross to cross on in a south south easter.
Some nice head high plus action on the beach break and some bigger bombies exploding out the back... kind of took me back to that super powered day in Mauritius !
Took your advice in regards to sheeting in super hard on the forwards and its been working pretty well.
When are you coming up for a blast up here ?
Nor easter is starting to fire and Samurai is there for the taking ?
