Maybe you were over exerting yourself while holding your breath. The key is to relax and swim as efficiently as possible and state of mind. If you can take your mind off breathing and focus wholly on the task it can make a huge difference. I cut 15 squid jigs out of a 2ft ball of fishing line at 30ft under a jetty, each one took quite a while to cut out. After trying to gather them up in my arms I then realized I hadn't been breathing and started gasping for air. I know if there were more lures in the ball I could have stayed down a lot longer, as it was 4 minutes would be a conservative guess.
By relaxing and swimming efficiently I've had scuba dives of over 2 1/2 hours bottom time on one tank and even fell asleep for 15 to 20 minutes while feeding some fish!( this is where you make comments about water beds and wet dreams

). Hmmmm, maybe one can be too relaxed
