Paint stripper , if you sand it you'll go through the veneer .
Sand it gently.
Paint stripper could stain/perish even further the exposed wood.
Also, an option would be, to not remove all the old paint, just the loose stuff.
And then veneer it with a product of your choice, that will capture the old school look of the board.
