Friend of wifes is selling her 2010 cruize CDX diesel with 23000klms for $18k and has offered it to us before she advertises.

Whadya reckon? car was $28k new.

But in 5 years it probably wont be worth much at all?

For the same money u can get a new petrol hatch like an i30 or similar.

For 18k i'd be going for either a Corolla or a Lancer. Better reliability and will hold there value more than a cruize.

Check fuel consumption on the cruize.

Sorry but some of you blokes are dreaming! Cruzed are a genuinely decent car and pretty good value for money.

Reliability is great, well built (not compared to a 70k euro but apples with apples) fuel is good and they drive ok (as ok as a slow front wheel drive will drive anyway). Pretty safe etc etc

18k probably not a bad buy if its as good conditions as the kms suggest.

A quick google says you can get a brand new Cruze for $22,500 driveaway. That's got the full warranty to go, 12 months rego, a brand new set of tyres, a new battery, wiper blades, it doesn't straight away need an oil change and it's an extra year off needing its timing belt replaced. Your savings at $18,000 are getting thin. The CDX version possibly had a whole lot of little over-priced extras, like gps and reversing cameras but you can buy all those aftermarket at Supa Cheep autos for a fraction of the CDX markup.

I've heard the Mazda 3 is also a good car for the same price, but just a little too pretty for a bloke to drive around in don't you think? Get a new Cruze.

Ian K, it might be considered bogan if not just narcissistic to suggest that a car is no good because it isn't 'whatever' enough. My old man thought I was crazy to want a Swift, all just because there weren't that many of them around. Well maybe not here, but they are a dime a dozen in Japan and have a great rep.

Mazda has come a long way in recent years and should also be a consideration for the intelligent consumer. The 3 wagon is a nice motor.

Unless you SUP- then you'd be better off searching for an old tank at the former Soviet military salvage yards.

Swifts are great cars! One of the best days of my life involved the worlds greatest race track and a race prepared (cage, suspension, brakes etc) swift.

Very high quality cars. Apparently the new nissan is great as well.

Sits on the freeway doing 100 using 7lts per 100. The cars weighs almost 2 ton and is in constant 4x4

She would use at least $90 worth of fuel a week now she only using $40

That's 1.1 litres per 100km saved, or 11 litres per thousand, doing 20,000 a year that's 220 litres, at $1.40 = $310 saved on fuel per year by going diesel. How much extra to buy and run a diesel? Go petrol, besides diesel is carcinogenic.

Most new cars reqiure you to run them on premium unleaded which is generally dearer than diesel.

Diesel are way more reliable and cheaper to service.

maybe the old tech, but the new common rail high performance ones are no more reliable/ long lived or cheaper IMHO. Probably heaps worse near the end of their life (pumps, injectors, high rail pressure etc)

thanks all for the replies. gonna give it the big miss and probably look at a mazda 3 or i30 or similar a bit later (new). Petrol mazda3 drive away no more to pay 20990 - mags, bluetooth etc etc. would be nicer if it was a bit more efficient at 7.9l 100k though.
