just heard on ten news that they are not going through with the sinking , a court has delayed it ..is this good or bad???

I'm always for people protesting against potential environmental damage.
Having said that, I think if the wreck is as clean as possible, the eventual outcome will be positive. An artificial reef system that will support a lot of marine life and a popular local tourism attraction.
Hopefully the appeal forces the navy to prove that the wreck is as safe and clean as possible.

Ive just had a thought, the only one today, they should just ram into Scarbough Beach. Then the sand will build up on each side so then we will have a left and a right all year!

THere are very strict environmental guidelines when a sinking is being executed, the ship needs to be completely stripped of all oils, fuels & chemicals and any solids that may break down over a short period and cause harm to the biodiversity...the argument that recycling would be a better option is a bit anti-green as the energy needed to do this defeats the purpose. However, by sinking the ship, they can create a man-made reef in locations that can increase sea-life of all kinds, and they are a great tourist attraction for divers!

ABC or SBS did a doco some months ago about prepping and sinking one in NZ

I think it may have been off Auckland where they put it down. They , the

people charged with doing the job were very thorough, as the contract stated,

and they must have received a packet for the sinking, but they worked for it.

All round the world it is happening, maybe some of those against it don't really

have much of an understanding of life. possibly they should be sent down to

Davy Jhonse's Locker too, give the world a break [}:)][}:)]

Its just a cheap way to get rid of old ships, why dont they recycle the steel so we dont have to mine more iron ore?

you might find that it isnt that cheap. The enviro side of it is pretty onerous and only economic as a lot of volunteers are usually involved. Ships are usually taken to India to be broken up.

FYI Manly Fast Ferries are doing a day trip from Circular Quay/Darling Harbour to the site. Quite expensive but could be of interest to some people.
