Hi John ,

Don`t go to Marmion Marine Park , well don`t get caught anyway .

If you need practice shooting , go to the domestic air terminal and pracrice on those Vix and Sydney snyders , just injur them cause we want them to go back and spread THE WORD .

If you happen to be from over there , well there`s nothing to see here , move along !!

Hi Jaysee,

There aren't too many Spearo's on this website, there are better places to go for that .

To answer your question, and I am assuming you mean rock hopping from the rocks or beaches.

There is pretty much nowhere you can spearfish from the shoreline of Perth Metro. You can shore dive from the Northern end of the Marmion Marine Park which ends about 600m North of Burns Beach, but there is bugger all to see or spear up there as vis is usually pretty crap and no fish! .

The southern boundary of Marmion Marine Park is Trigg Point so this takes out all of the good reef. The Marine Park extends 3km offshore but you can spearfish from 1800m from the beach. It's a bit of a swim if you're up for it and maybe expect the rangers to be waiting for you to prove you weren't in the Marine Park.

From Trigg Point south is all sand/surf beaches until Cottesloe so totally crap for spearfishing. Cottesloe Reef system is totally protected from spearfishing as it used to get smashed by rock hopping spearos many moons ago. Once past Cottesloe, there is nothing until Cockburn Sound which is also a marine park, so I guess what I'm saying is there is no shore diving in Perth.

All the reef out further ie 3 Mile reef line is hit pretty bad by lino's, spearos on air and breath hold so don't expect much although you can occassionally surprise yourself in the right conditions. I've seen very flighty Mackeral out there once!

You cannot spearfish from Rotto and cannot even take a gun onto the island, it's totally forbidden and the locals get angry when you even talk about spearfishing on Rotto.

If you are keen for a dive, give me a call and you can come out with us. I'm just back from a days trip to Cervantes today. Awesome days diving, sunny, no swell, light breeze, clear visibility (20m+), warmish water (17 deg). We speared some nice big Balchin Gropers (4), a Yellowtail kingfish, and a Western Blue Groper. A nice days catch. Let a few Dhu's go as they weren't quite size. Dived with Dolphins, Turtles, seals, big rays and plenty of fish, was a great day.

You really need a boat to dive in WA. There is good diving on the reefs off stragglers and Champion Rock (half way between rotto and Freo.) Usually diving for Dhufish, Baldchin, Harlequin fish, KGW, Queen Snapper and Western Blue Groper. Lots of other fish available too if you want a fight, like Sampson Fish but they taste pretty crap. In summer it's Spanish Mackeral.

Give me a call and I'll hook you up with our club if you're keen, there are always divers looking for crew on their boats both midweek and weekends. We have a meeting on Tuesday night at 7pm if you are interested in coming along and meeting some like minded spearos. Bluewater Freedivers of WA. We meet once a month and meet at the Challenge stadium Pool once a week on Thursday nights for pool training.

Good winds,

well Kitehard ,

You don`t seem like a not too bad a person , plenty of blood on your hands !
We`ll be up in cervanties in October , rape and pillage , just before the Dhu ban starts .

Hey jaysee , on a serious note , the only shoreline diving around Perth I can think of is too get your self a long light gidgie and chase those sand whiting along the beaches . Spots around Coogee beach area used to be good for half decent size whiting but I don`t know now with all that work going on there but I`m sure other areas` will hold some , hard work for a feed though . But if you`r keen though , bring a catch bag there`s always the blue manner about to help top up things .

Other than that Kitehard has pretty much summed it up , in one epic post .

Hey Digital,

Damn ban on Dhu's Then again, there aint that many around so I guess maybe we need to do something.

Hi Jaysee,

Pool training is just to basically keep some level of fitness of finning and breath hold in between dives in the big blue. We generally do bulk laps with fins and swim lengths underwater to practice dynamic apnea. We don't do a lot of statics. It's also a good chance to catch up and have a yak about recent dives and fish.

I'll PM you the address and times of the next meeting if you want to come along. It's next Tuesday night.

Cheers mate,

got room for one more? i just started spearfishing, got kinda crappy second hand gear but its great fun.

After a couple days of low swell and light easterly's i go to the rocks north of jindalee ave. If you dont have a 4wd you have to walk about 10-15min along 4wd tracks. Google earth it. Its south of the alkimos ship wreck. But im the same, dont know of anywhere else you can go in perth, everywhere is protected.

there is sweet fark all in perth, you need to head away from the metro area or out to rotto on your own boat. don't let em see you if you find somewhere to go as it is most likely banned, all around freo harbor is. cottesloe and surrounds are, marmion area definitely is. had some fun up at wedge one time but also saw small sharks and got worried about where the big ones where

I gave up spearing around perth, whenever I take my gun the fish vanish. Now I mainly just dive for crays though I have cought a couple of big cuttlefish with the cray loop, both times in self defence. If we put suction cups on the end we could play underwater skirmish.

Hi Skotup,

Same advice I gave Jaysee. If you are interested in real spearfishing in Perth you need a boat otherwise your kinda restricted to shooting red banded morwong and buff bream

I am part of a good club, the Bluewater Freedivers of WA. We are a bunch of all ages keen as hell spearos. About 60% of the club own boats, the rest just bum lifts which is a great way to go.

We meet once a month and are pretty friendly and easy going, but we are way keen divers. We pretty much always score a feed. Usually a couple of nice Dhufis or Baldchin at this time of year. If not, Queenies, Harlies and Black arse are also around. In summer we shoot Spanish Mackeral to 25 kilos around Perth. There are Mahi Mahi out off the FADS and Yellow fin Tuna too.

Lots of great fish, but you mush have a boat. Contact me via PM if you are keen to learn more and get out and hit some good fish.

Good winds calm days,
