for being at risk at putting my jatz crackers on the chopping block , how`bout if you have been fishing or killing something and have photo`s , then you should post it here within a day or 2 of the capture to keep it fresh .
i shall start ..

well after tea tonight i decided to go for a dive in the river and catch tomorrows night tea .
the menu.. 2 crabs and 1.9kgs of prawns

Tell me Dig, how do you go about catching prawns and crabs?
Ive never done it before. Do you use a torch? Does it scare them away? Personally I wouldnt eat anything caught from the river

not too good tonight , lots of baby stuff that got put back but one keeper . out of freo . www.seabreeze.com.au/gallery/gallery.asp?imageid=4330

i dive alone in the river at night on scuba to get me prawns , been doing it for years . i use a torch with 35watt irc globe which they say is the same as 50 watt halogen and have a tank mounted battery pack .
the prawns don`t give two hoots about the light .
you can dive anywhere from Freo to pt walter jetty or a bit further and on thursday night i was lurking between 17-19m .
catch rates will start to double that once the rains start .

also the river is probably at its cleanest since uropean trash first colonised this state .

hey digi, need some squid tips, Ive got access to a boat in freo and someone suggested just drifting around near fish rock off south beach, is this worth a go? And I suppose you just cast out with a standard squid jig? After 7pm would be easisest fo me is this the sort of time of day I should consider?
Tips appreciated.

Mmmm prawns, apparently they are at their best when a body is/has been in the river somewhere.

Squid night time, they are attracted to light.

hey arancini ,

if you have use of a boat it will help heaps . just try any weed banks you see out there but make sure your jigs a moving a bit , fast or slow doesn`t matter niether does depth of water .

put a welding helmet on also because they are good at getting you in the eye .

that all makes sense then , my pb was last year , just over 6kgs on one dive at Bicton in winter . my mate saw a body being pulled from the water about 500m up river few months before .

anyone who is about to die or got any dead bodies laying around , can you use the river , the king prawns need you .

arancini ,
night time is good for squid but make sure your jiggy glows if at night . drift or anchor both works but main thing is get out there and do it . i will be tomorrow . hey i am no expert at anything but i do try , you should see what the guns catch , especially the old guru divers in the river .

cut squid tube and lay out flat .
on a plate mix flour , a tiny bit of lemon pepper seasoning , a tiny bit of curry powder and mix dry ingredients well .
cut dolphin shape pieces out of squid and lightly flour and fry in shallow pan in hot oil until crispy .
salt to taste .

serve with king prawns and crispy snapper pieces.

digi, you are rapidly becoming my fishy hero. Did you catch those squid at night? and you suggest glowing jigs, do you need to "charge" them up with a torch or something first?

UUUUUHHHH yeh.
Lucky I did'nt post some of my other pickies.
No I totally don't go out to rape the ocean of it's goodies, mostly catch and release.
Actually these days there is a lot less of the Catch, so no need for the release.
Fish pretty casually these days though, so dont put in the effort to catch the big ones around Perth.
