We all know that pollies of whatever persuasion will say and promise anything to be in power.Just watched Joe Hockey on lateline ,the big guy is just itchin to reign in Lil Johnny's middle income handouts but has his hands tied to keep the softly softly line . C'mon Joe don't just espouse your wishes but have the guts to spell out true reform in middle/ upper and corporate welfare (yeah OK the Mad monk wants you to toe the line and continue the 'Big horrible carbon tax " mantra .)

God help us if he ends up treasurer, he said we have an unaffordable system because of welfare. What rubbish, the GFC was caused by a right wing ideaology to let bankers go to the casino with our super. It was keating's banking reforms that stopped aussie banks following the corruption in the US and europe. He doesn't seem to have any understanding of economics.

The question is whether a family earning a combined $40k or $60K or $120K or $150k a year deserves government assistance.

I don't think it used to be that families with two or three times the average wage were entitled to receive government handouts.

It would be better to adjust the tax system so income earners are taxed less in the first place than to take money away in the form of tax and then give it back in the form of benefits.

I work in tax, and can assure you, its more about redistribution of wealth to middle class voters..........

Fk middle class welfare..... its a joke.

2% Debit tax across the board......... limit company ownership structures to 4-5 entities to prevent financial engineering for artificial losses.......

Tax revenue would increase massively, and the playing field would level..... but.... TOO many vested interests............for this to happen....

You better get used it it coz the way its going Joe will be our next federal treasurer. Unless Julia can pull a bunny out of the hat, perhaps by really becoming a Labor PM, the ALP will be lucky to field enough MPs to make up a shadow cabinet after the next election.

And yes fellow OZ's we will find it can get worst! How long do you think it will take to have work choice in and what will be the new name??
We should run a book on it![}:)] Or a comp! Win a hand full of peanuts if you come with the best name!
Anyone can tell of 1 new policy stated by the mad monk? By the way, repeating how bad the carbon tax is every 2 minutes is not a policy!
the big issue here is we have no much choice...... the bad or the worst!

yes it is a policy .the policy is oppose ,oppose oppose,oppose,oppose,oppose..............and gues what it works
(we get what we deserve, no one questions anything ,and labour are useless at asking the mad monk and Joe how to articulate what they have planned and couldn't sell lollies to kids if they tried .they are so bloody arrogant too didn't they learn anything from when Keating was punted .Tony is right about the economy ,its ****ed(well not as ****ed as spain ) ,i'll give him credit there, he does seem a bit more in touch with the real world with all his bricklaying and car part assembling, sandwich making and so on that he does.Penny Wong makes me mad with her statement saying he's wrong about the lousy economy. You need to get out a bit more Labour )

I look forward to PM Abbott and President Romney, then we can punish all those dole bludgers that caused the GFC, and stop those greenie evangelists who made up global warming.

Future's lookin good.

First Tony's gonna pay me 1/2 my annual salary to stay at home with a baby for 6 months, then Barnaby wants to increase the baby bonus to 10,000, (that's $60,000!!), then Tony wants to pay for us to have a nanny when I go back to work. Then Joe says reign in welfare.

Spoilsport.

So it seems that Joe has thrown Labor a life line ,Tis a shamme that the debate will denegrate to one over the dole and welfare for the desperate rather than a debate over middle income welfare.Unfortunately the status quo will remain (why anyone would pay 6 k for having a baby is beyond me)

technically they couldn't actually even make a cabinet in this parliament, had to draft in an unelected ex-state premier into an elected position just to get a foreign minister to fill in big gap

This is from ...Mark Latham???
http://www.afr.com/p/lifestyle/review/climate_change_denial_not_just_for_sFAw16a7QU34KIj2tmN4eJ

^ That's a pretty good piece actually.
In a nutshell: Combating Climate Change was the feel-good thing of 2007, everyone was for it, but then people realised they had to give up their modern, materialistic lifestyle they'd always had aspirations for. Plus with the internet anyone that reads about anything is an expert (dunning-kruger).

Gentlemen, we are through the looking glass.

1. You can't legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it.

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Dumb-ass slogans that are perfectly logical... if you look at the science of economics as a simple black and white picture book that any 6 year old could understand.

AM radio fodder at it's finest - it sounds great when buried in the general stream of drivel, however doesn't stand up to any real scrutiny.

Beats me how the achievements of this government are ignored or just attacked for no good reason. This week it's the announcement that we will be bringing our troops back from Afghanistan.....great! two weeks ago the confirmation that the government are headed for the planned surplus in the upcoming budget....great!.....last week PM announces new spending(4 billion, I think) on aged care...great! Add to that the NBN, health funding increases, big increases in old age pensions, a pretty good econonmy.................and what's the general feeling about this government? disinterest at best and downright hostility at worst. I don't get it!

I don't think so, I reckon people are just cynical. Everybody thinks pollies are liars, thieves, etc etc and no one can cut through. Even the details of Shortens disability scheme sunk without trace and that was/will be a fantastic thing for people with disabilities and their carers. No one was interested.....is this democracy at work....I think democracy is sick. Anyway what's wrong with salma Hayek

Government exists to redistribute wealth. It's no secret. That is their primary purpose.

...what, exactly, did you think they were for?
