hey all, long time user of SB, finally registered for forums..

anyway this might be strange to ask in a Seabreeze forum haha but it just hit me recently that my old man is well getting old. Now he loves golf, goes out every week, does golfing trips monthly etc.

I personally find golf a little slow compared to speeding down a line or getting barrelled. But I guess it'll be pretty fun to be able to go hit a few holes with him when he comes around to visit.

So what do yous reckon is the best way to pick it up? I already have a set of golf clubs that he left at my place. Should I look for classes or...? Anyone can recommend good relaxed coaches? Not wanting to be good at golf or anything, just want to be able to play. In Perth btw.

cheers

My 2 cents worth on bonding with your dad at golf.

Drop your dad at the golf course, go surfing for about 4 hours, meet your dad at the 19th, beers and a feed, then your dad can drop you home.

But on the serious side, ask your dad to give you a few tips, maybe go to a driving range.

My number 1 rule for you is, dont try and hit the ball tooooooo hard.

enjoy

Practice practice and more practice.
Practice putting at home on the carpet, backyard or down the park (well away from people) for chipping and higher irons and driving range for lower irons and woods.
If your a real stinker get a couple of lessons from your local golf course. They aren't that expensive and they'll show you the basics that will get you started and hitting the ball properly. If you've got a crap technique it's going to take a lot longer to become an average player.
It really all does come down to the more you play the better you become.
Lot of people bag it but golf is actually good fun when you become a semi decent player.

Beer.

You'll only play golf without beer once.

You'll impress your Dad if you can keep the beers cold for a full round without dragging an esky.

Hmmm... long time SB user whose first post is about golf. Wtf??

Assuming you are serious, BE CAREFUL. For years, I too once thought golf was for balding old men who were too broken to play a real sport. I too only tried it as a way of spending time with a loved one. Then when I least expected it, IT BIT. Now it's uncontrollable - I can't stop. Luckily golf hates wind, so windsurfing and golf get on quite well. Golf and SuP not so much...

Before you worry about a lesson, find a quiet, relaxed, social golf course somewhere - 9 hole courses like this are common in country towns. Here you can just have a crack without worrying about copping abuse from people who think they're playing for the green jacket or impatient golfing tailgaters.

My hot tip is don't rush in and get a lesson - let your natural hand eye coordination have a crack first. Too many technical tips too early can fry your brain - get so caught up in aspects of your swing that you forget it's really just about putting the little white ball in the hole.

Above comments are also true - beer and ridiculous shorts will both help your game

a few golden rules,

relax,
bend the knees,
don't look up to soon after connecting with the ball,
swing through the ball as if it wasn't there and most importantly make sure you hit the ball further than the ladies tee! local rules will come into play.

enjoy

Hahaha
Pretty sure I read somewhere that it was Winston Churhill that said that. I'm a hacker from way back. Play a couple times a year hit plenty of crap shots but it feels good when you hit a cracker.
Have fun and don't take it to serious. Cold beers in the buggie make it better

Drink - used to run boats with a couple guys that loved golf in the States (they have "refreshment carts" on most courses we played on) I hacked a ball around and got pissed as a fart.

Good way to spend a morning when it's too windy to surf and not windy enough to kite.

With great thought,,,,, welcome

GO TO THE DRIVING RANGE my friend

No walking
No loosing balls
No red faces for you, off the first tee

And you can smash on to your hearts content, you may even get someone collecting balls to aim at.
