WOW, I didn't know kitesurfing is an extreme sport. I'm proud of myself now!

From the page

"The West Oz Kiteboarding season has now closed and will not re-open until October 2008."

You can be proud....unless you are from WA. Seems like they shut up shop due to the cold ;)

Who makes up these definitions anyway? What's the difference between an "extreme" sport and normal sport? I've seen more extreme things done on a skateboard or football field than on the water.

Ok, 2 days after posting this, I broke my femur during kitesurfing (OUCH!!!!!).
I'm out of hospital since yesterday and on cratches now.
Anybody ever heard of someone else breaking his/her femur during kitesurfing?
If so how did it happen to them?
I don't know for sure how it happened to me (everything went so fast and I was under shock) but I believe my left foot came out off the left (LF comp) strap during a jump and the board acted as an extension of the leg when I entered the water again.
I don't want to describe the pain. It was awful!

Ouch, that's a pretty hard bone to break isn't it? .

I think I remember echostorm breaking a few bones in his leg last summer...

I'd say it is extreme as you make it, you can't say what Lenten does is not extreme - but then again there are many people who believe a sports extremity is based solely upon how easily it is to kill oneself while doing it.

I remember watching my uncle kitesurfing years and years ago, I thought it was pretty extreme and I must say a lot of people who haven't done it before would say the same. I mean yeh strapping yourself to a giant kite does sound pretty crazy, but when you learn how not to get yourself thrown into things then it becomes less scary.

So in concept it is extreme, there are just so many different elements thrown into one sport that ends up looking so unique. But as far as extremity measured by injury, death etc, then no.

I'd also say advertising a sport based on it's extremity would encourage too many showponies to join up; they far outnumber adrenaline junkies.

I guess it depends on your definition of an extreme sport.

If you are into teaching yourself to kite in 30kts on a flash 19m C kite straight off eBay, then yup, I reckon you are entering into an extreme activity. In the same vein I would also class Russian Roulette somewhat extreme and about the same stupidity level.

For the rest of us, the risk of death or serious injury is limited by our common sense (most of the time) to that of say wakeboarding, snowboarding and other fun sports that are actually pretty safe, but sometimes a bit brutal on the body.

Yes that extreme sport would be....................horse riding.

Statistically the most dangerous animal in Australia, the horse.

why wouldnt kiteboarding be classed as an extreme sport. ususaly the kite has the ability to lift you off the ground, and if your unlucky enough get lofted really high.
