February is generally the windiest of the ocean breezes during the summer season. The wind direction can be SE (30% chance) or NE (65% chance) and 5% dead South. Normally it is morning westerlies backing off at 10.00am for the NE to start around 11.00am. NE winds historically have been at there strongest at the end of February for the past several years and we can expect from 14 to 25 knots. I always have a 9m and 12m in the back of the truck at this time of year.
The dates chosen are to work with the tides during the comp. The tides will be low moving to high and this will help give a bit more size to the waves. The dates are also following a Full moon and at this time of year we normally see large swells htting the tuncurry bar. The banks that form in the area that the contest will be held are generally A shaped giving a choice to go left or right on the same wave or in the case of a NE swell the rights will be fast and lefts slow and long.
Myself and few other locals kite here all the time and have been getting in some good sessions already with the NE winds of late.
Another great spot to kite there is the BAR entrance on a run out tide which would be good for an expression wave session but too far out for a comp.
Need any more info then just let us know.
Hope to see you all there.
